About The Position

As a Transformer Manufacturing Technician at Torus, you will perform the hands-on fabrication, winding, and assembly of critical power transformer sub-assemblies at our GigaOne facility in Salt Lake City. Working across Laminations Manufacturing, Coil Manufacturing, and Core and Tank Assembly, you will operate specialized winding machinery, process precision silicon steel, and build core-and-coil structures into protective enclosures. Operating within a high-standard manufacturing environment, your attention to detail and craftsmanship will directly drive the quality and reliability of energy infrastructure powering communities and critical systems across the nation.

Requirements

  • 1 to 3+ years of experience in electromechanical assembly, precision machine operation, wiring, metal fabrication, or transformer/motor production.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, assembly drawings, electrical schematics, and work instructions accurately.
  • Hands-on proficiency with power tools, torque wrenches, crimpers, and precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, tape measures).
  • Demonstrated experience or comfort working around heavy machinery, overhead cranes, or high-voltage electrical components.
  • Basic computer literacy to log job travelers, record work orders, and complete quality documentation.
  • Must have the ability to safely lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of standing, bending, and executing repetitive tasks for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to read, identify, observe and recognize details, color-coding and fine print at close range on associated engineering drawings.
  • Ability to don personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, respiratory protective equipment with proper seal, coveralls, ear protection, gloves, eye protection & safety helmet.
  • Ability to observe, detect and respond to audible and visual machine malfunction warnings.
  • Ability to communicate information so others can understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must report to work reliably and with the ability to use full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute your job.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English required.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience in transformer manufacturing, specifically in layer/disc coil winding, silicon steel lamination processing, or core-and-tank assembly.
  • Experience with soldering, brazing, or electrical lead termination methods.
  • Current or prior certification in overhead crane operation, rigging, or forklift driving.
  • Vocational/technical training or Associate Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Technology.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual or CNC winding machines to wind copper and aluminum conductors according to engineering specifications and schematics.
  • Measure, cut, apply, and position insulation materials (pressboard, crepe paper, Nomex, phase insulation) between winding layers and leads.
  • Operate shearing, slitting, and punch machinery to process electrical silicon steel into precision lamination stacks for core fabrication.
  • Perform core lacing, stacking, and structural clamping of silicon steel through completed coil assemblies to precise dimensional tolerances.
  • Utilize overhead cranes, hoists, and rigging equipment to safely move heavy transformer cores, coils, tanks, and sub-assemblies across the floor.
  • Assemble bushings, tap changers, gaskets, and internal wiring harnesses before landing core-and-coil assemblies into protective steel tanks.
  • Complete basic quality checks, including turns ratio testing, winding resistance measurements, micrometer checks, and visual weld/fit-up inspections.
  • Complete job traveler documentation, serial tracking forms, and standard quality logs accurately.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment following 5S, Lean, and shop-floor safety guidelines.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
