About The Position

This position is responsible for developing, delivering, assessing, and coordinating technical training for Operations and Maintenance technicians supporting Southern Power’s solar, wind, gas, and battery storage facilities across the United States. The role is based primarily at a Southern Power generation facility and works as part of a technical training team focused on maximizing technician capability while minimizing impact to plant operations. Training is delivered through a combination of in-person and virtual methods and may include the use of simulators, hands-on equipment, and other instructional technologies. Southern Power and its subsidiaries, some of which are owned in part with various partners, own or operate 55 facilities operating or under development in 15 states with more than 13,150 MW of generating capacity in Alabama, California, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maine, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming. The individual in this role supports these assets by ensuring technicians are equipped to safely and effectively meet evolving operational and technological demands. This position is safety-sensitive and requires frequent travel to generation sites and training locations.

Requirements

  • Exceptional technical writing, facilitation, presentation, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and CoPilot
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Prior technical training experience and/or training-related certification
  • Operational or maintenance experience in gas combined cycle and/or renewable generation facilities, including familiarity with SCADA systems, operating procedures, and general business practices
  • Experience in electrical (AC/DC), substation, renewables, operations, and/or Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) roles, or equivalent positions
  • Demonstrated project management and multi-tasking capabilities
  • Experience with contract preparation, negotiation, and administration
  • Knowledge and experience with budgeting, reporting, and tracking

Responsibilities

  • Execute all phases of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT), including technical assessments for technicians across multiple generation technologies (gas/oil combined cycle, gas/oil simple cycle, solar, wind, and battery storage).
  • Design, develop, implement, evaluate, and revise training curricula for both in-person and virtual learning environments.
  • Deliver classroom, on-the-job, and simulator-based training using a variety of instructional methods and tools.
  • Utilize gas technology simulators, mechanical and electrical simulators, computer-based training (CBT), virtual learning platforms, and dynamic instructional strategies.
  • Supervise technicians during training to ensure standards of conduct, safety, and training quality are met.
  • Develop and maintain training program schedules, materials, documentation, and performance metrics.
  • Coordinate training schedules, enrollment, attendance, delivery, and evaluations to optimize operational impact.
  • Identify training gaps and develop programs, learning paths, and individualized training plans as needed.
  • Quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate training effectiveness and develop performance indicators to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Integrate industry best practices, OEM guidance, lessons learned, and human performance insights into training programs.
  • Participate in human performance or root cause analyses to identify training-related impacts and corrective actions.
  • Serve as a resource for the scheduling, delivery, and evaluation of vendor-provided training.
  • Support and manage the budget for external training activities.
  • Leverage existing Southern Company training resources and facilities when appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with technical schools, community colleges, and external training partners to expand and enhance training offerings.
  • Manage projects that improve training processes, including planning and cost control.
  • Interface with Maximo for project planning, tracking, and budget management.
  • Assist generating facilities with maintaining training records, assessments, and compliance documentation.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings, Operations Review Boards, and other support meetings to review training performance and upcoming curriculum.
  • Safely operate company vehicles, tools, and powered equipment.
  • Comply with all safety requirements, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Meet physical demands of accessing equipment using ladders, scaffolding, personnel lifts, and fall protection systems.
  • Travel up to 50%, including air and long-distance ground travel, sometimes exceeding an 8-hour workday and requiring multi-day site visits.
