About The Position

The Trail and Stewardship Technician is a field-based, part-time position responsible for maintaining a portfolio of trails and supporting stewardship activities across multiple counties. This role is well-suited for an experienced, self-directed individual who enjoys working outdoors and takes pride in hands-on work. The technician will independently maintain 7 trails across 4 counties (Iredell, Gaston, Lincoln, and Cabarrus Counties), ensuring they remain safe, functional, and aligned with CLC standards. In addition, this position will support broader stewardship efforts, including compliance monitoring, land management, and volunteer engagement. This role also plays an important mentorship function, helping guide and support volunteers by sharing practical knowledge of trail work and land stewardship.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience with trail maintenance, land management, landscaping, or similar outdoor work
  • Ability to hike up to 7 miles on uneven terrain and perform physical labor
  • Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability

Responsibilities

  • Independently maintain 7 trails across 5 counties
  • Perform routine inspections to assess trail conditions and identify maintenance needs
  • Conduct trail work including vegetation clearing, drainage improvements, tread repair, and signage upkeep
  • Ensure trails remain safe, accessible, and consistent with CLC standards
  • Assist with general stewardship, like compliance monitoring, needs across conserved properties
  • Support land management activities such as invasive control and preserve maintenance
  • Identify and communicate maintenance or stewardship issues to staff
  • Support and lead volunteer workdays
  • Provide hands-on guidance to volunteers on trail building and maintenance techniques
  • Serve as a knowledgeable, approachable resources for volunteers in the field
  • Track work completed and report progress to stewardship staff
  • Coordinate scheduling and site priorities with supervisor
  • Use basic tools (maps, GPS, or mobile apps) to document work as needed
