About The Position

Join the Iowa DOT’s District 4 team and play a key role in keeping Iowa’s highways safe, efficient, and well-managed. As a Traffic Technician, you will support critical traffic engineering activities—from sign inspections and plan development to managing traffic studies and supporting work zone operations—helping us deliver on our mission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, highway design, materials inspection, or materials testing.
  • A total of seven years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in civil engineering or a related field equals one year of full-time experience.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or Design Technician Specialist, or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician, Highway Technician Senior, Engineering Operations Technician, or Design Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field day and night reviews of highway signs for compliance with requirements outlined in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Review and develop highway sign and traffic signal plans for compliance with the MUTCD and Iowa DOT standards and policies.
  • Manage requests from Local jurisdictions for traffic control devices.
  • Assist in the development of annual pavement marking program for the District.
  • Manage District highway sign assets.
  • Provide direct support to District Engineer, Assistant District Engineer, District Maintenance Manager, District Construction Engineer for the development of traffic incident management (TIM) routes and work zones.
  • Develop highway project plans for the traffic safety and operational improvements.
  • Coordinate review proposed routes for annual events (e.g. RAGBRAI) with respect to current and planned construction and maintenance projects and provide information to District staff.
  • Manage oversight of various traffic engineering studies (Traffic Engineering Assistance Program, Road Safety Audits, etc) to include technical reviews, district coordination, central office review, local agency coordination, and status tracking.
  • Provide direct support to Area Engineers and Assistant District Engineer for development of detour, and Preconstruction Agreements.
