About The Position

Under general supervision, perform and if assigned, lead field work on a designated shift to install and maintain signs, and manually mark pavements along and at intersections of specified minor arterial and collector streets or comparable low traffic density locations, in accordance with established rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a combination of two (2) years general services work or trades helper experience.
  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by time of appointment.
  • Positions requiring a CDL or positions of a safety sensitive are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, and repair prefabricated traffic control, street name and information signs following applicable state and local regulations, and established department procedures.
  • Assemble sign faces and fixtures.
  • Cut and trim metal pipe and angle iron for signposts, hangers, and frames.
  • Paint angle iron and metal pipe.
  • Read maps and engineering drawings prepare worksite measurements and locate postholes within specified distance tolerances.
  • Notify property owners that trees or bushes obstruct vehicular traffic views of legally required signage, and trim them as authorized.
  • Dig postholes in ground or drill them in cement with jackhammer, and insert and secure posts in cement bases.
  • Mount signs on posts with strapping, and hang signs from overhead arms by climbing ladder or riding boom lift as necessary.
  • Straighten bent signs, patch concrete post bases, reattach fallen signs, replace missing signs and broken strapping, or fix similar damage.
  • Remove graffiti from signs and city property
  • Check reflectivity with digital meter and replace faded traffic control signs as prescribed.
  • Inventory installed signs by affixing and scanning barcodes, patrolling assigned routes to note locations and condition of signs, and entering required details about signs into database.
  • Prepare and mark pavements and other surfaces as assigned.
  • Read maps engineering drawings to make work site measurements and lay out markings within specified size and distance tolerances.
  • Clean work areas and operate walking rollers and other applicators to paint. repaint or affix striping tape and thermoplastic material for new or for maintenance of existing white broken lane lines, double yellow lines, and edge lines to mark streets for vehicular driving, and create or refurbish markings for other traffic control purposes, including, but not limited to, pedestrian and school crosswalks, bullet noses, yellow curbs, loading zones, pedestrian crosswalks, bullet noses, arrows for turn lanes, stop-a-heads, parking stalls, and related lettering.
  • Schedule, assign, guide and check work.
  • Prioritize, coordinate and review operational and procedural activities.
  • Report on quantity, quality and timeliness of work performed by crew members to supervisor.
  • Enforce personnel and work rules, regulations and performance standards as authorized.
  • Assist technicians as crew member with preparing and assembling sign faces, operating striper truck, and other specified aspects of more complex projects, as assigned.
  • Set up barricades and safety cones around work sites, and divert traffic.
  • Report traffic hazards and violations.
  • Receive and stock supplies.
  • Respond to emergency recoveries as assigned.
  • Load and unload materials, paints and signs needed for daily assignments.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to equipment and tools.
  • Maintain work order logs.
  • Clean up work area.
