About The Position

Under general supervision, learns to provide and provides semi-skilled and skilled technical support to the City's public works street department in the maintenance and repair of traffic signals; performs other related duties as required. The Traffic Signal Technician I is the entry-level class, which provides a training opportunity for entry level staff to learn on-the-job skills. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This classification is alternatively staffed with Traffic Signal Technician II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating a level of proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

Requirements

Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
One year of experience
Must be 18 years of age by time of appointment
Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license
Ability to obtain an IMSA Traffic Signal Level I Certification within one year of employment

Responsibilities

Learns to perform and performs a variety of work involved in the maintenance of traffic signals, including testing equipment in the signal control cabinet; checks heads for damage, alignment, burnouts; checks the pedestrian push button for proper operation.
Troubleshoots in the field to restore operation to traffic signal control devices that have failed due to electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire/cable problems due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews.
Installs and removes traffic signal standards and streetlight poles and related equipment, such as underground conduit and pull boxes, mast arms and luminaries, writing, signal heads, pedestrian signal heads, and backup battery systems.
Performs concrete work as required for installation and repairs of signals and light standards.
Inspect traffic signal and light installation work performs by contractors.
Programs various types of computerized traffic signal controllers.
Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
Provides assistance to other departments, City personnel, and the public; responds to inquiries and provides information regarding traffic signals and lights, or other information.
Maintain accurate maintenance, repair, and inspection records and monitor materials and inventory.
Performs repairs and maintenance on air conditioning units and evaporative coolers.
Locates and marks underground lines and equipment at signalized intersections for Underground Service Alerts.
Assists the Street Department in projects as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
