About The Position

This position is accountable for providing expertise and assistance with the safety and efficient design and operation of the districts interconnected traffic signal systems, highway lighting systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the district.

Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor of science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college OR a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois. Those applying with only a degree must have a minimum of 2.0 (out of 4.0) cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA). If cumulative GPA is between 2.0 and 2.5 (out of 4.0), applicants must also possess a current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate OR a current Professional Engineer license in the state of Illinois OR a current Structural Engineer License in the state of Illinois.
  • 37 months of civil engineering experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • District-wide travel.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Ability to supervise and inspect the work of contractors on major engineering projects in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provides in house expertise needed for the safe and efficient design and operation of all the districts traffic signal, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and highway lighting systems.
  • Develops and/or updates simple to complex timing plans for all in house projects and contributes to design specifications for all district interactive traffic/railroad systems.
  • Reviews Signal Coordination and Timing (SCAT) consultants work and provides direction for Signal Design consultants.
  • Designs traffic signal, ITS, and highway lighting plans consistent with Bureau of Design & Environment (BDE) policies and procedures.
  • Provides liaison with railroads, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) and local governments.
  • Implements departmental safety rules, practices and policies for self and others.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
