About The Position

The purpose of this class within the organization is to install, repair, maintain, and troubleshoot traffic control signals and signaling devices. This class works under close supervision according to set procedures. The Traffic Signal Specialist is responsible for striving to be efficient and effective at balancing and meeting the common needs and reasonable expectations of core constituents, and contributing towards the department's mission by continuously striving to meet expectations, strategic goals and objectives. Key functions include installing, repairing, maintaining, and troubleshooting traffic control signals, signaling devices, and related electrical equipment in the field or in the shop. This also extends to HID street lights, exterior building lighting systems, bridge lighting systems (including navigational lights and programmable LED lighting), programmable electronically controlled school zone warning systems, and informational signs and banners. The role involves working with underground cabling and conduit, street lighting (pole/mast and light) and associated power distribution lines, pedestrian signals, school flashers, and electrical components at various City owned and/or operated buildings and parking lots. The specialist must also be available on-call for two-week periods, responding to issues like pole knock downs and traffic signal malfunctions at any time of the day or night.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience in traffic signal work or closely related field
  • Must Possess and maintain a valid State of West Virginia CDL Class A Driver's License
  • Must Possess and maintain a valid West Virginia State Fire Marshal Electrician's license

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Traffic Signal Technician Level I or II

Responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots traffic control signals and signaling devices and related electrical equipment in the field or in the shop.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains HID street lights and exterior building lighting systems, bridge lighting systems including navigational lights and programmable LED lighting, programmable electronically controlled school zone warning systems, and informational signs and banners.
  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots underground cabling and conduit, street lighting (pole/mast and light) and associated power distribution lines, pedestrian signals, school flashers, and electrical components at various City owned and/or operated buildings and parking lots.
  • Remains on-call for two week periods at a time, answering calls from Metro 911 and dispatch, and responding to problems including pole knock downs and traffic signal malfunctions at any time of the day or night.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
