About The Position

This is skilled electronics work in the City's Traffic Engineering Division. An employee in this class installs, services, and repairs electronic devices used in the control of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Works independently on school flashing zone devices, flashing intersection controls, and pedestrian warning devices. Assists higher level technicians working on complex electronic controls and devices. Work is sometimes hazardous and often performed under adverse weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in the repair and maintenance of electronic controls and devices, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles of the operation, repair, maintenance and installation of electric wiring systems, equipment, controls and circuits.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of electrical work.
  • Knowledge of the principles of electricity.
  • Some knowledge of basic logic circuitry.
  • Knowledge of solid state electronics theory.
  • Ability to use signal technician tools and equipment.
  • Ability to trace troubles and defects in wiring systems and equipment and to take necessary action.
  • Ability to test and repair a variety of complex electrical equipment and devices.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex diagrams, plans and specifications.
  • Sufficient physical stamina to work out of doors under adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, services, programs, and repairs all types of school, traffic, and pedestrian flasher circuits.
  • Studies blueprints and schematics, locates cable or wires, traces out defective circuits, determines the cause for failure and makes necessary repairs.
  • Changes bulbs on traffic light fixtures.
  • Keeps logbook of all calls.
  • As skill level permits, works on electronic devices under guidance of a Traffic Signal Electronic Technician II.
  • Performs related work as required.
