About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Traffic Safety Systems Operator 1 (Part-Time, Non-Permanent) to support safe and efficient travel throughout the North Central Region. This position plays a key role in monitoring traffic activity and communicating critical information to maintenance crews, the traveling public, law enforcement, and partner agencies. The incumbent operates and monitors traffic management systems, including traffic cameras, variable message signs, variable speed limit signs, radio systems, and highway alert tools. This role helps coordinate timely responses to roadway incidents, traffic impacts, and changing travel conditions. Safety for employees, coworkers, and the traveling public is expected to remain the top priority in all aspects of the work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in handling multiple tasks simultaneously in an emergency response environment.
  • Experience as a principal radio operator or dispatcher using multi-band, two-way radio equipment and personal computers.
  • Experience operating radio, phone, and computer networked communications systems.
  • Knowledge of roadway maintenance activities, operational procedures and emergency response practices related to transportation systems operations.
  • Experience operating traffic management, roadway communication, or traveler information systems such as variable message signs, variable speed limit signs, notification systems, or similar transportation technology tools.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the North Central Region Traffic Management Center (TMC) during assigned shifts to support safe and efficient highway operations.
  • Dispatch and coordinate communications using the regional radio system while maintaining accurate and detailed radio log entries.
  • Manage messaging systems, including Variable Message Signs, Variable Speed Limit Signs, Mountain Pass web tools, and highway alert email systems, to communicate roadway and weather conditions.
  • Communicate with WSDOT field staff, other Traffic Management Centers, law enforcement, government agencies, and the traveling public through phone, radio, and email.
  • Monitor traffic conditions, roadway activity, and incidents using traffic cameras, scanners, and radio systems.
  • Notify off-duty personnel for emergency call-in work and advise management of priority or significant highway events within the region.
  • Receive, update, and distribute weather conditions and mountain pass restrictions throughout each shift.
  • Support Emergency Operations activities and relay administrative requests and operational information as needed.
