About The Position

Under administrative direction, the purpose of the position is to perform supervisory and technical application of pesticide and herbicides to include the planning, organizing and coordination of OCPS’s Integrated Pest Management operations and Herbicide applications. Incumbents bring and apply technical knowledge and skills to the assigned functional area. Must understand environmental principals involved with pesticides and herbicide applications. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according to the area of assignment. Performs related work as directed.

Requirements

  • Vocational/technical training in landscaping and pest control; supplemented by minimum five (5) years progressively knowledgeable and technically skilled work in the horticultural trade, a portion of which shall be in a lead worker capacity demonstrating ability to coordinate, delegate, and inspect specific duties and tasks of the work; with demonstrated technical knowledge of any applicable laws, codes, ordinances or other regulatory standards governing the trade; preferably for a large commercial or industrial institution; or and equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must understand environmental principals involved with pesticide and herbicide applications.
  • Must have a State of Florida limited certification in lawn and ornamental pest control.
  • Must obtain a State of Florida Structural certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of electric and gas-powered service equipment, as well as standard hand-held maintenance tools.
  • Operate computers and associated programs, i.e. Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Perform semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.
  • Tasks involve the regular and at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50) pounds.
  • Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
  • Some tasks require oral communications ability.
  • When conducting inspection duties, tasks may present potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dust, fumes, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, electrical currents, bright or dim lighting, and toxic/poisonous agents.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Works collaboratively with district maintenance and construction personnel, other applicable departments, private/public contract service provide, and school administration in planning and coordinating tasks and providing scopes of work for projects.
  • Reviews and/or assists in preparation of contracts and/or bids and associated specifications for vendors, contractors and/or service providers.
  • Provides planning, organization, coordination and direction of Grounds IPM Program.
  • Ensures adherence to prescribed pesticide and herbicide application schedules and established district, state, federal, and environmental policies and standards.
  • Receives and critically reviews facilities and property maintenance and repair work orders, preliminary plans and proposals to determine feasibility/advisability.
  • Ensures cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of district property; addresses safety concerns in a time efficient manner; reports real or potential environmental/maintenance concerns.
  • Operates OCPS Grounds’ vehicles with a trailer, to include herbicide spray rigs.
  • Discusses facilities and property maintenance and repair projects with requesting schools, private contractors, and district supervisory and managerial officials.
  • Prioritizes and coordinates project specifications required per job site; supervises and delegates tasks to personnel under charge.
  • Inspects progress of on-going projects; provides upper-level management with information concerning project status or any relevant special concerns; ensures adherence to approved plans and specifications.
  • Plans and schedules major repairs, renovations, and landscape projects and activities in a manner to minimize disruption in routine school district activities and to enhance the landscape appearance at schools.
  • Interacts with private consultants/contractors, as needed, and inspects and monitors contractual work for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Oversees the proper care, use and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS.
  • With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.
  • Performs related duties as directed.
