About The Position

The Trade Specialist I performs manual, physically demanding plumbing, electrical, and other maintenance work which is done both indoors and outdoors. Typical assignments include providing preventative maintenance to county property, repairing and cleaning county property, assisting other staff in the completion of their assignments, and facilitating the efficient operation of county properties however they may be assigned. Employee may be directed to work at times not normally scheduled in order to complete work as needed. Supervisors will expect the employee to independently and correctly complete assignments. The employee is expected to be skilled and proficient in the safe use of normal building-related equipment and the maintenance of both hand and power tools.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and hardware.
  • Two years of experience.
  • Valid US driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Current proof of automobile insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and/ or hardware.
  • Trade or Vocational school certificate in plumbing, HVAC or electrical.
  • City of Wichita Backflow license.
  • EPA license (Type 1 and 2 or Universal).

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and make appropriate repairs of county plumbing systems, including plumbing work related to domestic water and waste systems.
  • Repair leaking faucets, valves, pipes, and drinking fountains; unstop and repair toilets and drains; install plumbing ducts, pipes and fixtures including for hot water and HVAC systems.
  • Perform primarily cast iron waste line repairs and independently clear waste lines of obstructions both above and below grade, behind walls and chases, or above ceilings using a commercial grade sewer machine.
  • Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and repairs such as lighting, ballasts, fan motors, and switching devices.
  • Change lamps and bulbs.
  • Convert light fixtures to LED.
  • Assist electrician.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment including: cleaning coils, cleaning registers and grilles, changing filters, belts, clean and treat condensate pans, greasing bearings and changing fan motors.
  • Assist all Licensed Trades as required.
  • Perform carpentry work in repairing County buildings and furniture.
  • Repair flooring, wallboard, ceilings and ceiling tiles, roofs, exterior walls, and concrete.
  • Construct dimensional walls with wood/metal studs, hang sheetrock and finish with mud/ tape, painting where required.
  • Paint rooms, hallways, and ceilings; patch holes; prime area for painting.
  • Move office furniture including desks, files, and books.
  • Repair various types of locks (pneumatic, electronic, mechanical), door hardware, and door controls.
  • Possess the ability to safely and properly operate power equipment such as saws, grinders, drills, sand blasters, welders (arc welder, wire feed welder, and oxy-acetylene torch), fork lifts, and a variety of other equipment.
  • Drive trucks and operate equipment in the loading of trucks.
  • Remove snow and ice using hand shovel or snow equipment, possibly starting early in the morning depending on timing of storm.
  • Perform related work as required.
