About The Position

Tyler Union, a division of McWane, Inc., is seeking a Tooling Design Engineer responsible for the design, development, and optimization of foundry tooling, including patterns, core boxes, and material handling devices, used in the manufacture of ductile iron waterworks products. This role provides technical guidance for tooling design, gating development, casting process optimization, and tooling-related capital projects, considering all stages of the production process. The Tooling Design Engineer collaborates with various departments and external suppliers to ensure safe, cost-effective, and high-quality production, upholding company standards and The McWane Way principles.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of engineering experience in a foundry or heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of tooling design experience.
  • Strong communication, leadership, coaching, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to analyze data, solve problems, and implement effective solutions.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency in Solidification/Flow analysis simulation software (Novacast or Magmasoft).
  • Experience with Hot or Cold box core systems for Laempe or Shell Core Machines.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nice To Haves

  • Cast iron or ductile iron products experience.
  • Experience with waterworks products, pipe fittings, valves, hydrants, or other engineered casting applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize foundry tooling (patterns, core boxes, material handling devices).
  • Provide technical guidance for tooling design, gating development, and casting process optimization.
  • Manage tooling-related capital projects.
  • Design foundry tooling for horizontally and vertically parted molding machines, including Hot or Cold box core systems.
  • Run Solidification/Flow analysis simulations to optimize gating and risering.
  • Lead Sand Core Making Simulations.
  • Coordinate with department heads for sample runs and implement corrective actions.
  • Requisition and coordinate tooling builds, including procurement of tooling quotes.
  • Maintain a Request for Quotations log.
  • Initiate Authorizations for Equipment and Purchase Requests.
  • Review and approve final tooling inspection reports.
  • Manage all aspects of tooling revisions and log Engineering Change Notices.
  • Coordinate with corporate engineering support for related projects.
  • Collaborate with Design, Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, Pattern Shop, and Production teams to establish corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ensure all activities comply with company safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture.
