About The Position

Blue Origin is seeking a senior tooling design engineer for Blue Origin Operations, supporting manufacturing and supply chain across its facilities. The role applies engineering expertise, leadership, and a commitment to quality to the development of rocket hardware and safe human spaceflight. The engineer designs tooling and equipment for production and integration of the New Glenn Launch Vehicle, solving a variety of mechanical design challenges and collaborating with flight designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering. The role also manages custom-tooling projects from vendor selection and fabrication through inspection, installation, proof testing, and commissioning, while maintaining schedules and budgets. The position requires extensive experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling, fixtures, custom machines, and manufacturing support equipment; structural analysis and hand calculations; CAD-based modeling and drafting; and knowledge of manufacturing processes, materials, GD&T, and tolerance analysis. Relocation is provided, and travel is expected up to 10% of the time. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship or immigration eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 10 years of experience designing, building, and commissioning tooling, fixtures, custom machines, or design support equipment for manufacturing, assembly, and test.
  • Experience with FEM and complex structural analysis, including the ability to perform hand calculations and create free-body diagrams.
  • Proven experience with CAD-based design software for modeling and drafting.
  • Strong expertise in design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including taking products from development design to rate production.
  • Understanding of common manufacturing materials, GD&T, and tolerance/stack-up analysis.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment, including CNC machining, manual mills and lathes, welding, sheet-metal bending, lifting and rigging, assembly, and inspection.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ASME BTH-1, the Aluminum Design Manual, and AISC.
  • Experience with custom machine design involving motors, actuators, linear rails or actuators, pneumatics, hydraulics, and bearings.
  • Experience with Creo and Windchill CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with NX and Teamcenter CAD/PDM systems.
  • Experience with analysis packages such as ANSYS Workbench, FEMAP Pre/Post processing, NASTRAN Solver, and NX Advanced Simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Design tooling and equipment for production and integration of the New Glenn Launch Vehicle.
  • Develop effective tooling solutions, considering multiple design options and advanced manufacturing approaches.
  • Integrate mechanical design and analysis principles across projects of varying sizes and scales in a fast-paced environment.
  • Apply design and drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5, when creating drawings.
  • Address design challenges involving assembly fixtures, material handlers, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines.
  • Work independently and collaboratively, pursue self-improvement, and support the development of fellow engineers.
  • Collaborate with flight designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering to optimize safety, cost, quality, cycle time, delivery, reliability, service life, and maintenance or refurbishment.
  • Manage tooling projects, including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, proof testing, and commissioning.
  • Communicate effectively and set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets to ensure project completion.
  • Demonstrate accountability individually and as part of a team.
