Vast is looking for a Fabrication & Tooling Specialist, Special Projects reporting to the Production Manager, Structures to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Toolmaker, Machinist, and Welder or similar hands-on fabrication role
  • Background in an R&D, prototype, or low-volume production environment, you are comfortable working with incomplete information and evolving requirements
  • Strong proficiency with manual and/or CNC machining equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and 3D CAD models
  • High mechanical aptitude and a meticulous eye for quality and precision
  • Self-starter mentality, able to take on loosely defined tasks and drive them to completion with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across engineering and manufacturing team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or other highly regulated industries
  • Familiarity with a broad range of materials including aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, and composites
  • Exposure to assembly tooling for large-scale or complex structural builds
  • Experience with CAM software and/or basic CAD modeling (SolidWorks, CATIA, or similar)
  • Understanding of manufacturing quality systems and documentation practice

Responsibilities

  • Design, fabricate, and modify tools, fixtures, jigs, and other manufacturing aids to support a variety of special projects across mechanical assembly and structural integration
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Manufacturing and cross-functional engineering teams to understand build requirements and translate them into practical tooling solutions
  • Support prototype and R&D builds from early concept through completion, adapting tooling approaches as designs evolve
  • Operate manual and CNC machine tools including mills, lathes, grinders, and other shop equipment with a high degree of accuracy and craftsmanship
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, CAD models, and technical specifications to produce tooling that meets tight tolerances
  • Troubleshoot tooling and fixturing issues on the fly and propose effective, timely solutions
  • Maintain, repair, and organize tooling inventory and shop equipment
  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, tooling efficiency, and build quality
  • Work safely and maintain a clean, organized work environment in accordance with company safety standards
