About The Position

Plan, layout and perform a variety of machining and assembly operations to fabricate tooling, jigs and fixtures, meeting exacting tolerances and specifications. May also sharpen and grind various types of cutters and form tools.

Requirements

  • Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
  • Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
  • Four-year apprenticeship.
  • Five plus years of experience.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Associate’s degree (A.A.), or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school.
  • Six months to one year of experience and/or training.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Knowledge of GD&T.
  • Can operate lathes, vertical mills, grinders, gages and saws.
  • Metallurgy knowledge.
  • Familiar with design, part layout, and process planning.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate tools for new and existing jobs by reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders and shapers.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications.
  • Repair damaged tools and gages by diagnosing tooling out of tolerance specifications.
  • Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
  • Design, make prototypes, and fabricate tools and gauges.
  • Run production parts when necessary.
  • Maintain and continuously improve productivity of assigned machines.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Continuously look at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.
  • Reduce downtime of machines setups.
  • Maintain the 6S program in assigned area.
  • Organize tool room.
  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and general housekeeping of tool room machinery.
  • Troubleshoot various production machines.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Follow and ISO and Schafer procedures.
  • Channel problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
  • Support all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Report to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
  • Provide input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvements.
  • Resolve problems.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.
  • Help evaluate job applicant’s knowledge for the cell prior to Schafer hiring.
  • Pass along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts.
  • Train new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.
  • Assist and/or train in other areas as needed.
