Tool Maker IV/EDM

Envista Holdings Corporation•Pomona, CA
•$35 - $42

About The Position

The Tool Maker IV independently manufactures, troubleshoots, repairs, and optimizes high-precision molds, dies, tooling, fixtures, and components, working to tolerances as tight as ±0.0001 inches. The role uses advanced CNC machining, Wire EDM, Sinker EDM, CAD/CAM programming, precision measurement, mold design, and tool fabrication skills. It calls for strong technical judgment, problem-solving, process improvement, and leadership in complex tooling projects, including in highly regulated manufacturing environments such as medical device production. The Tool Maker plans and executes tooling projects, selects machining methods and parameters, interprets engineering drawings and 3D CAD models, and programs, sets up, operates, troubleshoots, and optimizes machine tools and EDM equipment. The role also validates tooling and components, conducts process studies and root cause analysis, leads troubleshooting and risk mitigation, mentors less experienced machinists and toolmakers, and drives continuous improvement in safety, quality, productivity, cost, and workflow.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Tool & Die, Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline; technical apprenticeship; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 10 years of progressive experience in precision tool making, mold making, die making, or advanced machining environments.
  • At least 10 years of experience programming and operating CNC Sinker EDM equipment, controllers, and post-processors.
  • At least 10 years of experience producing high-precision tooling, molds, dies, and fixtures to tolerances of ±0.0001 inches.
  • At least 10 years of experience using Mastercam or equivalent CAM software.
  • At least 10 years of experience with CAD systems, including SolidWorks.
  • Advanced understanding of GD&T, blueprint interpretation, tolerance stack analysis, and precision manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to machine, inspect, and validate precision components used in medical device or similarly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills for complex tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience implementing Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, engineering drawings, specifications, safety regulations, and operating instructions.
  • Ability to prepare reports, documentation, and technical correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to engineers, management, suppliers, and manufacturing personnel.
  • Microsoft Office Suite skills, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software, CNC machine programming and editing software, and Wire EDM and Sinker EDM control systems and programming interfaces.
  • Experience working with 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and digital manufacturing files.
  • Proficiency in file management, technical documentation, and electronic record keeping.
  • Ability to create reports, analyze data, and track project progress using spreadsheet and project management tools.

Responsibilities

  • Manufacture, repair, modify, and maintain precision molds, tooling, dies, fixtures, and replacement parts using tool room machinery and specialized equipment.
  • Plan and execute tooling projects independently, selecting efficient machining methods, processes, and operation sequences to meet quality, cost, and delivery objectives.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, specifications, and 3D CAD models to fabricate high-precision components and tooling.
  • Operate manual and CNC machine tools, including milling machines, grinders, lathes, Wire EDMs, and Sinker EDMs.
  • Select cutting tools, work-holding fixtures, feeds and speeds, lubricants, and machining parameters for different materials and applications.
  • Program, set up, troubleshoot, and optimize CNC machining centers, Wire EDM, and Sinker EDM equipment using CAD/CAM software.
  • Develop and modify CNC programs and post-processors to improve machining efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability.
  • Build, troubleshoot, and validate molds, dies, fixtures, and tooling assemblies against engineering requirements.
  • Use precision measuring instruments and advanced inspection equipment to verify dimensional accuracy and tolerances.
  • Program and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM).
  • Conduct process capability studies, experimentation, and validation to improve machine performance, quality, and consistency.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for tooling, machining, and manufacturing issues.
  • Lead tool troubleshooting and develop risk mitigation plans to minimize downtime and improve manufacturing reliability.
  • Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to less experienced machinists and toolmakers.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, cost reduction, and workflow optimization.
  • Maintain a culture of craftsmanship, precision, and workmanship excellence.
