About The Position

Hatch is seeking a Thermofluids & Thermal Hydraulics Engineer in the Pittsburgh area to join its Technologies team, which commercializes and delivers technologies across the Metals, Energy, and Infrastructure sectors. The role delivers specialized mechanical and process engineering for heavy industrial projects, applying first-principles analysis, calculation tools, and numerical methods—including Computational Fluid Dynamics—to solve fluid-flow, heat-transfer, and related transport-phenomena problems. The engineer prepares calculations, process-related deliverables, technical reports, and scopes of work; collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and clients; contributes to design decisions; and may conduct site visits and measurement campaigns. The role also supports business development and technology development, develops in-house numerical tools and models, and writes and presents technical papers at industry conferences. Work may involve export-controlled projects, requiring the successful candidate to be a U.S. Person or otherwise eligible to work on projects subject to 10 CFR 810.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Process, Chemical, or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognized university.
  • Completed core courses in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and numerical methods with high standing.
  • Professional Engineer (PE/P.Eng.) licence or demonstrated progress toward licensure.
  • At least 3 years of progressive experience in mechanical, process, or chemical engineering.
  • Strong interest and capability in first-principles analysis and design, particularly for novel industrial applications without established workflows.
  • Demonstrated application of theory to practical problem-solving through education or work experience.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming, such as Matlab, C++, Fortran, or Python.
  • Strong understanding of numerical methods, such as finite-volume and finite-difference methods.
  • Critical thinking and ability to establish effective solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to manage assigned work independently, collaborate effectively, and meet quality, cost, and schedule commitments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to colleagues and clients.
  • Interest in client engagement and business development, with ability to contribute to proposals and project pursuits.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) or otherwise eligible to work on projects subject to 10 CFR 810.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in heavy industry.
  • Coursework in transport phenomena, finite-volume methods (CFD), combustion, multiphase flows, aerodynamics or hydrodynamics, compressible flows, or thermodynamics.
  • Proficiency and experience with commercial CFD software such as Ansys Fluent, Siemens STAR-CCM+, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with commercial 1-D flow-network software such as Flownex or Arrow.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience with NFPA, ventilation codes such as ASHRAE, and/or nuclear-industry-related codes such as NQA-1.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and deliver mechanical and process engineering work involving fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer for heavy industrial projects, meeting scope, budget, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Use first-principles approaches, calculation tools, and numerical methods, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to solve fluid-flow and heat-transfer problems.
  • Assess transport-phenomena topics such as multiphase flows, porous-media flows, conjugate, convective, and radiative heat transfer, phase-change heat transfer, chemical reactions, and mass transfer.
  • Prepare calculations, process-related deliverables, technical reports, and scopes of work.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across regions and offices to develop and deliver practical solutions for clients.
  • Communicate analysis and assessment results to engineering teams and clients.
  • Participate in design decisions and guide project teams in decision-making.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand technical needs, communicate findings, and build working relationships.
  • Support business development through proposal preparation, client meetings, project pursuits, and contributions to technology-development initiatives.
  • Perform site visits and measurement campaigns on some occasions.
  • Develop in-house numerical tools and models.
  • Write and present technical papers at industry conferences.

Benefits

  • Flexible work environment.
  • Long-term career development.
  • Opportunity to work with great people and collaborate on exciting projects to develop innovative solutions.
