About The Position

Hatch is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for Equipment Technologies Delivery to join its team in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office. The Technologies team commercializes and delivers technologies across the Metals, Energy, and Infrastructure sectors, providing specialized engineering and novel solutions. This role plans and delivers mechanical and structural engineering work for heavy industrial projects, using first-principles analysis and numerical methods to develop and optimize equipment and structural designs. The engineer prepares technical deliverables, works with multidisciplinary teams and clients, and contributes to proposals, project pursuits, and technology-development initiatives. The position involves export-controlled projects; candidates must be a U.S. Person or otherwise eligible to work on projects subject to 10 CFR 810.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineer (PE/P.Eng.) licence or demonstrated progress toward licensure.
  • At least 3 years of progressive mechanical and/or structural engineering experience, preferably in heavy industry.
  • Strong interest and capability in first-principles analysis and design, particularly for novel industrial applications where established workflows may not be available.
  • Experience designing or assessing equipment and structures such as pressure vessels, cranes and supporting structures, piping systems, heavy industrial structures, or custom machinery, considering phenomena such as creep, fatigue, and buckling, as well as high stress, temperature, and pressure.
  • Experience with numerical analysis software such as ANSYS, supported by strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn new tools.
  • Ability to manage assigned work independently, collaborate effectively, and meet quality, cost, and schedule commitments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to colleagues and clients.
  • Interest in client engagement and business development, with the ability to contribute to proposals and project pursuits.

  • Familiarity with formal quality-management systems, such as ISO-based or nuclear-specific programs, is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and deliver mechanical and structural engineering work for heavy industrial projects, meeting scope, budget, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Apply first-principles engineering and numerical methods to equipment-technology challenges, including machine design, thermo-mechanical assessment, novel process equipment and structures, thermofluids, and thermal hydraulics.
  • Develop and optimize design concepts and solutions to improve the performance of industrial assets.
  • Prepare calculations, design drawings, technical reports, and scopes of work.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across regions and offices to develop and deliver practical solutions for clients.
