About The Position

Hatch is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for Equipment Technologies Delivery to join its Technologies team in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office. The team commercializes and delivers technologies across Metals, Energy, and Infrastructure, providing custom engineering solutions and technologies. This role plans and delivers mechanical and structural engineering work for heavy industrial projects, applying first-principles engineering and numerical methods to equipment-technology challenges. The engineer develops design concepts, prepares technical deliverables, works with multidisciplinary teams and clients, and contributes to business development and technology initiatives. The position involves work on export-controlled projects. The successful candidate must be a U.S. Person (a U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) or otherwise eligible to work on projects subject to 10 CFR 810.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, or a closely related engineering discipline from a recognized university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE/P.Eng.) licence or demonstrated progress toward licensure.
  • At least 3 years of progressive experience in mechanical and/or structural engineering; heavy-industry experience is preferred.
  • Strong interest and capability in first-principles analysis and design, particularly for novel industrial applications without established workflows.
  • Experience designing or assessing equipment and structures such as pressure vessels, cranes and supporting structures, piping systems, heavy industrial structures, and custom machinery, considering creep, fatigue, buckling, and other conditions involving high stress, temperature, and pressure.
  • Experience with numerical analysis software such as ANSYS, supported by strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn new tools.
  • Ability to manage assigned work independently, collaborate effectively, and meet quality, cost, and schedule commitments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to colleagues and clients.
  • Interest in client engagement and business development, with the ability to contribute effectively to proposals and project pursuits.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) or otherwise eligible to work on projects subject to 10 CFR 810.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards.
  • Experience with ASME Section III, ASME Section VIII, AISC 360, ACI 318, or similar industry standards.
  • Familiarity with formal quality-management systems, such as ISO-based or nuclear-specific programs.
  • Experience in heavy industry.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, execute, and deliver mechanical and structural engineering work for heavy industrial projects, meeting scope, budget, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Apply first-principles engineering and numerical methods to equipment-technology challenges, potentially including machine design, thermo-mechanical assessment, novel process equipment and structures, thermofluids, and thermal hydraulics.
  • Develop and optimize design concepts and solutions to improve industrial asset performance.
  • Prepare clear, high-quality deliverables, including calculations, design drawings, technical reports, and scopes of work.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across regions and offices to develop and deliver practical, differentiated client solutions.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand technical needs, communicate findings, and build working relationships.
  • Support business development through proposal preparation, client meetings, project pursuits, and contributions to Hatch technology-development initiatives.
