Thermal Engineer

Supermicro•San Jose, CA
•$105,000 - $125,000

About The Position

Supermicro Computer is seeking a skilled and experienced Thermal Engineer to design, analyze, and validate thermal architectures and technologies—including liquid and air cooling—for networking servers and data storage products. The role uses a design process based on estimating, simulating, and testing thermal performance for new products and architectures. The successful candidate will bring strong foundations in heat transfer and fluid dynamics and will lead junior engineers. The position involves developing cooling solutions for servers, storage systems, and workstations; coordinating system layout with cross-functional engineering teams; validating thermal compliance; and providing technical support from component to rack level. The engineer will also work with vendors and contract manufacturers to develop and improve cooling solutions and investigate new thermal management techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent training.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience in the IT or computer server industry.
  • Experience as a thermal or mechanical engineer developing multi-node computer servers or blade servers.
  • Experience with CFD thermal/cooling simulation software such as Icepak or FloTHERM, and 3D CAD software such as AutoCAD, Creo Pro/ENGINEER, or SOLIDWORKS.
  • Experience designing heat sinks and air shrouds/fan ducts, selecting cooling fans/blowers, and applying liquid cooling modules.
  • Hands-on computer server system-level thermal testing or validation, including thermocouple installation, automated data acquisition, and operation of related laboratory equipment.
  • Experience running stress programs and scripts in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Ability to progress on multiple tasks simultaneously and adapt to changing requirements and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to different working locations to support project development.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute the design and development of liquid- and air-cooling solutions for servers, storage systems, and workstations.
  • Collaborate with motherboard, chassis, power supply, and system teams to optimize system layout and component placement.
  • Validate thermal compliance of systems and components against industry standards.
  • Summarize and present thermal and cooling technical data to engineering teams, vendors, and customers.
  • Investigate new techniques to advance cooling schemes and thermal management.
  • Interface with contract manufacturers and vendors on cooling solution development and improvement.
  • Provide thermal and cooling technical support from component to rack level.
  • Lead junior engineers.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Candidates may be eligible to participate in bonus and equity award programs.
