About The Position

Northrop Grumman Space Sector is seeking a Level 4 Thermal Analysis Engineer specializing in Systems Modeling & Simulation to join the Thermal Analysis team within Launch Vehicles at the Chandler, AZ facility. This role involves performing a variety of thermal engineering tasks, applying theoretical knowledge and engineering techniques to solve analytical engineering problems. The engineer will select and modify methods, formulas, design, and test information related to assignments. Key responsibilities include thermal analysis of avionics, structures, and thermal protection systems (TPS), performing heat transfer analysis of components and systems on the ground and in space, and addressing issues using skills in thermal sciences as they relate to missile and space systems. The role requires using classical heat transfer methods and software to predict temperatures and design thermal protection for rocket components, both on the ground and in flight. The engineer will also learn and develop proficiency with thermal analysis software such as Thermal Desktop, ATAC, StarCCM+, and FIAT, and interpret, select, and apply company/commercial/military specifications and customer requirements. Producing engineering documentation and technical reports, and gathering, compiling, and interpreting technical data are also essential functions. Other duties may be assigned upon request.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) with 8 years of related engineering experience, OR a Master's in STEM with 6 years of experience, or a PhD in STEM with 4 years related engineering experience
  • Ability to obtain a US Government Secret security clearance
  • Strong thermal background with demonstrated work experience and knowledge as a thermal analyst supporting launch vehicle and/or missile programs
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications
  • Familiarity with thermodynamics, aerodynamics, compressible flow, and TPS design
  • Computer skills with standard word processing/spreadsheet experience
  • Ability to listen effectively, take direction, and possess initiative to accomplish assigned tasks and complete work in a timely fashion

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical and/or Aerospace principles
  • Active US Government Secret security clearance, or higher at the time of application
  • Thermal Desktop, StarCCM+, and Matlab experience
  • Excellent written, and verbal communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Learn and develop proficiency with thermal software, Thermal Desktop, ATAC, StarCCM+, FIAT, and other specialized thermal analysis codes
  • Interpret, select, and apply company/commercial/military specifications and customer requirements to accomplish specific analyses
  • Produce engineering documentation and technical reports/analyses to support design, integration, and testing efforts
  • Responsible for gathering, compiling, and interpreting technical data such as flight data, test data, or material test reports
