About The Position

Right On Crime is looking to fill a State Director vacancy in Texas with someone up to the task of advancing effective criminal justice policy, and poised to assume the role as the leading conservative thought leader around conservative criminal justice policy. Right on Crime is a national campaign of the Texas Public Policy Foundation promoting conservative solutions for reducing crime, restoring victims, reforming offenders, while lowering taxpayer costs. The movement was born in Texas in 2007, and in recent years has since expanded to Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia. ROC has the support of more than 90 prominent conservative leaders who have endorsed the principles of conservative criminal justice reform. The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit research-based think tank in Austin, Texas. Established in 1989, TPPF promotes conservative principles and develops free-market approaches to public policy challenges affecting Texans and all Americans. To achieve its mission, TPPF analyzes complex issues, creates legislative policy solutions, and advocates for those solutions at the Texas Legislature, Congress, and other public forums.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of direct policy experience strongly preferred
  • Experience navigating Texas' legislative and political climate preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing, and public presentation skills
  • Experience and proficiency in interacting with legislators, media, stakeholders, as well as the general public
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and articulate complex legislative and regulatory issues
  • Ability to advocate for ROC principles and recommendations

Responsibilities

  • Testifying before legislative committees, general educational outreach to lawmakers, and lobbying. Note: this also includes identifying any legislative efforts that affect Texas criminal justice system, and articulating any positive or negative affect to lawmakers or other stakeholders
  • Developing legislative priorities with the TPPF Policy Team and ROC leadership that advance evidence-based criminal justice reform in Texas
  • Building coalition support amongst organizations within Texas
  • Project management
  • Research and writing policy briefs, perspectives, research studies, commentaries, testimony, blog postings, and opinion editorials
  • Conceptualizing and organizing policy events/activities designed to educate policymakers, stakeholders, the media, and the general public
