About The Position

The Test Solutions Software Section Lead is a player/coach responsible for establishing and leading a cross-program team that develops, deploys, and sustains manufacturing test software. The role serves as the technical authority for software used in manufacturing and automated test equipment, creating reusable architectures and consistent practices to support production throughput, yield, quality, and reliability across programs and sites. The lead consolidates and realigns test-focused engineers into a single section, develops a technical roadmap, builds cross-training plans, and partners with Program Engineering Managers and factory leadership to meet cost and schedule objectives. The role combines hands-on technical work—including architecture, code reviews, hardware integration, and troubleshooting—with people leadership, hiring, performance management, coaching, and career development. The section owns the full lifecycle of manufacturing test solutions, from requirements and architecture through coding, hardware integration, verification, deployment, and sustainment. The lead establishes reference architectures and engineering standards, improves production incident response and operational metrics, and supports bids and proposals by scoping and estimating test software work and identifying reuse strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field, and 10+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience deploying and sustaining software in constrained or regulated factory environments, including configuration management, release governance, change control, and audit readiness.
  • Demonstrated success in factory or production support environments, including ownership of incident response, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions for software issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interface effectively with Discipline Leads, Section Leads, Program Engineering Managers, Program Managers, Manufacturing/Test Engineering, and Quality.
  • Proven experience leading projects to successful execution on time and on budget, including risk management and stakeholder alignment.

Nice To Haves

  • Four or more years leading an embedded software or test solutions team through full-lifecycle delivery on hardware.
  • Hands-on manufacturing test software experience with C#/.NET, Python, C/C++, LabVIEW, NI TestStand or equivalent, and shell or PowerShell scripting.
  • Experience with test hardware and interfaces such as DAQ, PXI/VXI, SCPI instruments, GPIB, USB, Ethernet, SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, and RS-422/485.
  • Experience with Windows and/or Linux; RTOS experience such as VxWorks or FreeRTOS, or bare-metal drivers, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Agile workflows, CI/CD pipelines, static code analysis, automated testing, and software observability such as logging and metrics.
  • Knowledge of signal processing, guidance and control, or hardware-in-the-loop test techniques.
  • Experience configuring and deploying embedded operating systems and integrating them with production testers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop test solutions software engineers; establish growth plans, skill matrices, and cross-training rotations.
  • Manage staff performance, including reviews, coaching, career development, salary planning, rewards and recognition, and performance management.
  • Hire for a balanced skill profile spanning factory support, software craftsmanship, and data and diagnostics.
  • Own the reference architecture for automated test equipment and manufacturing test software, including driver abstraction layers, hardware-interface modules, test-sequence orchestration, data logging and traceability, and deployment hardening.
  • Lead design, implementation, hardware integration, and verification on the bench and factory floor.
  • Establish standards for code quality, documentation, configuration management, versioning, and release practices in regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Promote CI/CD practices for test software, including builds, static analysis, automated tests, and staged deployments suited to hardware-in-the-loop systems.
  • Integrate test software with factory systems such as build records, serialization, calibration data, and analytics dashboards in partnership with Manufacturing and Quality.
  • Establish on-call rotations and escalation paths, and track and improve mean time to recovery for production software incidents.
  • Define and routinely report operational KPIs, including uptime, first-pass yield, release cadence, defect density, common-platform adoption, and audit findings.
  • Plan and manage staff, facilities, and equipment needed for execution, including licenses, benches, instruments, emulators, and labs.
  • Plan, resource, and execute schedules to cost and schedule objectives; manage risks and drive corrective actions.
  • Support bids and proposals by scoping and estimating test software work and articulating reuse strategies.
  • Consolidate and realign reporting for test-focused engineers into a single section.
  • Define and execute a technical roadmap that standardizes platforms, patterns, and processes across programs.
  • Partner with Program Engineering Managers and factory leadership to meet schedule and cost objectives without sacrificing reliability.
