About The Position

The Terminal Operator/Cover Handler supports barge uncovering and covering operations at an export grain elevator. The role requires safe and productive handling of barge covers in varying river and weather conditions, operating in coordination with the Cover Station operator, and assisting with other facility duties as directed by the shift superintendent. The position also participates in facility safety, health, and environmental programs and helps maintain safe operations.

Responsibilities

Participate in facility SHE programs, maintain working knowledge of applicable policies and procedures, and comply with requirements.
Recognize barge cover types and use the correct rigging method before lifting covers.
Rig, lift, and reset barge covers safely and productively in all conditions, including varying river levels and inclement weather.
Follow direction from the Cover Station operator and understand the barge unloading process sufficiently to perform assigned duties.
Operate the barge winching system as needed to place cables on barges and position them in the slip for uncovering or covering.
Position arriving barges and place barge haul cables on bow and stern kevels as directed.
Identify grains and grain by-products when covers are lifted and communicate that information to the Cover Station operator.
Recognize normal operation of barge winching systems and hoist winches, and distinguish sound cables from excessively worn cables.
Identify excessive emissions from the barge unloader or ship-loading spouts and notify the Unloader operator.
Recognize hazards associated with barge unloading and help ensure personnel follow safe operating rules and policies.
Perform houseman duties as directed by the shift superintendent, including bin cleaning, housekeeping, assisting maintenance, and other duties necessary to operate an export grain elevator.
