About The Position

Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell Climate) conducts science for solutions at the nexus of climate, people, and nature, partnering with leaders and communities for just meaningful impact to address the climate crisis. It is a rapidly growing, top-ranked, independent non-profit climate research institute focused on advancing science-based climate policies through scientific research and outreach. The center's research helps individuals, organizations, corporations, communities, and nations understand climate change realities, recognize its impact, and embrace urgent action. This temporary Summer Field Technician role on salt marsh restoration projects involves understanding how effective restoration activities impact salt marsh ecosystem services, including assessing carbon decomposition, water level changes, plant dynamics, and sediment characteristics.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated skills in data organization and analysis
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to work independently and manage time
  • Good communications skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Relevant coursework in Ecology, Biology, Chemistry or Marine Biology
  • Willing to endure occasional exposure to insects, ticks and poison ivy
  • Ability and willingness to occasionally sample at irregular hours (early mornings, late nights, and weekends) as needed
  • 1 year of field experience

Nice To Haves

  • Prior field experience and familiarity with the techniques and instrumentation used to quantify saltmarsh ecology or a related field is desired
  • B.A. in Ecology, Biology, Chemistry, Ecology or Marine Biology or relevant field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a small team to gain broad experience through field and laboratory work across interdisciplinary fields including biology, chemistry and ecology
  • Participate in field and laboratory measurements of sediments, plants, and water samples which includes walking through waist-high marine waters and marsh
  • Process and analyze project data
  • Communicate positively with the public
  • Travel and work at Woodwell Climate and Waquoit Bay field sites from July through August
