The Telemetry Technician contributes to high-quality, cost-effective health care as an integral member of the patient-focused care team. The position monitors patient cardiac rhythms through a telemetry monitoring system. The technician observes and documents cardiac rhythms, differentiates irregular from regular rhythms and premature beats from escape beats, and notifies the RN of rate or rhythm changes according to established criteria and guidelines. Rhythm strips are documented every eight hours and whenever rhythms change. The technician calculates heart rate, measures PR, QRS, and QT intervals, and interprets rhythms; identifies proper pacemaker function and reports malfunctions to the RN; and maintains telemetry equipment and supplies, including changing batteries and pouches as needed.
