About The Position

UPMC Williamsport is hiring a full-time Patient Care Technician for its 6 East Progressive Care Unit. The position is 36 hours per week on night shifts from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., with every other weekend and every other holiday required. The final job title within the career ladder will reflect the candidate’s education and experience, as well as manager discretion at the time of offer.

The Patient Care Technician provides patient care and assists with procedures, activities of daily living, and physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. The technician reports changes in patient status and provides feedback to the RN. Core duties include nursing assistant responsibilities and unit support, documentation, communication with the healthcare team, and maintaining patient and workplace safety. Advanced skills may be assigned according to department operational needs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Meet one of the following experience or education pathways: one year of general healthcare experience; six months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA, with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion for those with less than one year of experience; enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare training program with at least one clinical rotation completed; or a completed bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
• Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class.
• Successful completion of eRecord training.
• CPR certification based on AHA standards, including didactic instruction and a skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
• Act 34 clearance.

Nice To Haves

• EMT or Paramedic qualification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program.
• ACLS.
• Competency in or performance of one or more advanced skills based on department operational need, such as phlebotomy or venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, or NG tube clamping and removal.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care, assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living, and assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
• Provide feedback to the RN about patient care and report changes in patient status.
• Perform nursing assistant duties, including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients, blood glucose testing, weights, vital signs, intake and output, specimen collection, Foley care, and telemetry monitor application or reapplication.
• Perform assigned additional clinical tasks, which may include phlebotomy, 12-lead EKGs, simple dressings, Foley catheter removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scans, straight catheterization, IV catheter removal, restraint placement, monitoring and removal, and NG tube clamping and removal.
• Support unit activities by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients, including intra-hospital transportation using ticket-to-ride procedures.
• Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department and communicate effectively with other departments and members of the healthcare team.
• Provide instruction to patients and families under the direction of the RN.
• Follow patient-care and hospital-information policies and procedures, including standard precautions and safety procedures.
• Document in the medical record according to established procedures, complete clerical functions as needed, and perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
• Identify and communicate learning needs, seek assistance with planning and prioritizing work as needed, respond constructively to feedback, and take action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
• Support department changes, projects, and quality initiatives; take responsibility for assignments and contribute to efficient department functioning.
• Maintain professional, respectful, and productive working relationships; demonstrate accountability, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
• Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions, and support safety for patients and self.
• Limit access to medications to distributing medication to the nurse.
