About The Position

The City of Aurora is seeking experienced Telecommunications Operator (911 dispatchers) for LATERAL entry with the Aurora Police Department. LATERAL Telecommunication Operator candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of employment as a full-time 911 Dispatcher/Telecommunications Operator with a law enforcement agency. Police dispatching and 911 call taking experience is required. Under the direction of the Lead Telecommunications Operator, Telecom Operators are responsible for receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and dispatching police, fire, medical and other emergency services accordingly.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) years of employment as a full-time 911 Dispatcher/Telecommunications Operator with a law enforcement agency
  • Police dispatching and 911 call taking experience
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Ability to work rotating shifts during training period
  • Ability to work mandatory overtime
  • Must successfully pass pre-hire requirements including but not limited to a polygraph and psychological assessment, interview, background investigation, drug screen and meet physical requirements including a hearing test
  • Tattoos to the head, neck and facial area are prohibited.
  • Hand tattoos are not allowed, however, there are very limited exceptions with approval from the Chief of Police.
  • Officers [Police Dept. Personnel] are permitted to have tattoos elsewhere, visible to the public, if the tattoo is not objectionable or demeaning to the image of the Department.
  • The nature, number, size, and location of the tattoos are all factors in determining whether such tattoos are objectionable or demeaning.
  • Examples include but are not limited to; tattoos that contain nudity, profanity, or to be perceived as gang related, criminal, obscene, sexual, racial, or detracts from the professional image of a law enforcement officer.
  • The covering of objectionable tattoos with make-up, sleeves, Band-Aids, etc., shall not constitute conforming to this policy.
  • All tattoos shall be covered for court appearances.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatch and track the locations of public safety agencies dispatched by the Aurora Police Department's Telecommunications Center
  • Perform constant data entry and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems
  • Extract data and record essential information during emergency calls
  • Operate a variety of communications equipment including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), Records Management System (RMS) radio consoles, telephones and other computer systems
  • Maintain required certifications to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and police related data entry and queries (Training and certification courses provided)
  • Perform general clerical duties
  • Other duties as assigned related to position
