About The Position

Provides support in implementing the operation and maintenance plan for MTC/Virginia National Guard facilities in assisting the Virginia Army National Guard in sustaining readiness and fulfilling our Federal and State missions. Provides Telecommunication Systems Repair, Maintenance and Installation Services and Underground Utilities Locate Functions for the MTC, Fort Pickett, SMR, and other VANG Statewide Readiness Facilities. The Telecommunications Mechanic - Senior Will: Provide telecommunication needs 24 hours per day, 365 days per year for military organizations, educational institutions and local government as well as transient military training operations, ensure availability of quality voice, data, and satellite and/or video signal for outside and inside plant operations statewide; Ensure the operational effectiveness of telecommunications switching systems and equipment supporting voice, data, and video, satellite communications statewide; Ensures operational effectiveness of (VOIP) network and maintain VOIP, Analog and Digital telephone network.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the characteristics and principles of AC and DC current and electronics
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and install electronic and electromechanical key and PBAX systems and telephones, data circuitry components, and other equipment and systems
  • Thorough knowledge of copper core and Fiber Optic transmission principles
  • Thorough knowledge of different electronic and solid State voice and data systems
  • Ability to understand and follow such technical guidance as circuit descriptions, schematics, and layout sheets
  • Ability to locate and repair trouble within the telecommunications system
  • Knowledge of office automation software
  • Knowledge of various types of electronic equipment used in the splicing and check-out of fiber optics cables
  • Knowledge of main distribution frames, control office operations and line equipment, and various types of cables (i.e. unit type, layer type, pair group, and corresponding color codes)
  • Skill in the use of various telecommunications, cable splicing tools and related equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of computer operations
  • Skill in use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of basic safety, and OSHA procedures and regulations
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and confined spaces, inside and outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to carry, lift and place into position equipment weighing up to 20 pounds and with assistance of lifting devices or other workers up to 50 pounds while wearing protective/safety equipment, in all kind of conditions
  • Extensive Senior level work experience in the Telecommunications Mechanics trades field is required
  • Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license
  • Must be Cat-6 certified

Nice To Haves

  • Senior level work experience in the Telecommunications Mechanics trades field is preferred
  • Utilities Locator Certification preferred
  • Must be able to obtain utilities locator certification within 18 months of hire
  • Must have, and maintain, a valid Virginia Driver’s License for the duration of employment
  • Must obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC)
