Job Description Job Summary Installs, maintains and tests telecommunications equipment used for data transmission supporting gas and electric utility generation, distribution and corporate services. Position will provide preventive maintenance on microwave radio, two way radio, advanced metering infrastructure, cellular, fiber and networking equipment. This position maintains appropriate documentation for all communications networks.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred Experience Education or a combination of training and experience equivalent to 2 year study in electronic technology, preferably with emphasis in IP Networking.
  • Knowledge of IP networking with Cisco or Juniper devices is preferred.
  • Deference and due consideration will be given to employees having completed related accredited apprenticeship programs as determined by JATC.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, commissions, maintains and troubleshoots telecommunication equipment for utility operations: this would include but is not limited to IP/MPLS routers and switches, Two-Way Radio base stations, mobiles, portables and fleet vehicle units, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) base stations, substation and tower site Remote Terminal Units (RTU’s), fiber optic cable terminations and OTDR, licensed and unlicensed microwave radio systems, communications tower lighting systems (excludes tower climbing) and battery plant systems.
  • Coordinates installation and troubleshooting with potentially multiple Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) for leased carrier services.
  • Works with Telecom and Substation Engineering with equipment installation, provisioning, topology and online drawing updates.
  • Installs and provisions cellular modems for communications at remote locations such as Substations, AMI cabinets and Metering.
  • Install, terminate, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of communications cables to include Copper CAT5e/6, coax, single mode and multimode fiber.
  • Install and maintain -48VDC battery plants.
  • Coordinate and facilitate equipment outages and cutovers.
  • Inspects locations to verify proper power, grounding, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) for communication equipment; inspects newly installed telecommunications equipment to verify trouble free operation; adjusts telecommunications equipment to meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Identifies and prepares list of equipment and material needed to perform telecommunications projects.
  • Verifies that material for projects is ordered and received.
  • Performs other duties that are similar or incidental to this position.
  • Performs all duties within established safety practices.
  • Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
