About The Position

Independently plans, researches, evaluates, designs, and develops network systems. Prepares detailed specifications and documentation from high-level designs. Configures, installs, and determines performance of networks. Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues. This position is posted at multiple grade levels and offers a range of opportunities for advancement. The minimum qualifications outlined below apply to the Telecom Consultant Sr level, with increased educational, skill, experience and certification requirements for higher level Telecom Consultant Principal.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, telecommunications, or related field of study or Associate's degree in field mentioned above with 2 years of relevant work experience or HS diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant work experience required.
  • 5 years of relevant work experience in addition to any experience mentioned above.
  • BICSI Outside Plant Designer (OSP) certification strongly preferred
  • Valid Driver's License Required.
  • Possess solid level knowledge of communications technologies and inter-networking principles.
  • Demonstrate superior technical skills in a single area of specialization.
  • Demonstrate competency in analytical techniques necessary to handle complex assignments (e.g., by dividing the problem into component steps, and performing the analysis necessary to complete each step.)
  • Exhibit understanding for pertinent telecom equipment, materials, systems and business processes.
  • Keep abreast of new products, developments, technologies, procedures and equipment.
  • Demonstrate ability to develop new approaches to make informed decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate and apply comprehensive knowledge of AEP telecommunications networks, fiber infrastructure, facilities, and supporting technologies to efficiently resolve operational and project-related issues.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of telecommunications standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Ensure all work activities are performed in accordance with company policies, safety rules, procedures, standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and reinforce AEP's safety culture through compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
  • Develop a strong understanding of AEP's organizational structure and effectively collaborate across departments to achieve business objectives.
  • Perform routine and complex telecommunications engineering and field activities with minimal supervision while exercising sound technical judgment.
  • Perform advanced to expert installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground fiber optic infrastructure.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting, system diagnostics, testing, and resolution of telecommunications network issues.
  • Coordinate and monitor telecommunications projects utilizing approved applications, tools, and project management processes.
  • Develop project scopes, prepare cost estimates, maintain project documentation, and support business and technical planning activities.
  • Utilize engineering and economic analysis techniques to evaluate alternatives and support project development and approval.
  • Lead and coordinate the work activities of team members, contractors, and other stakeholders; provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training as required.
  • Serve as project manager for assigned telecommunications and fiber network initiatives.
  • Inspect, maintain, and ensure the safe operation of tools, vehicles, testing equipment, and telecommunications assets.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, drawings, system documentation, and network asset information.
  • Perform advanced fiber splicing, fiber testing, connectivity verification, and network commissioning activities.
