About The Position

The JCC Ranch Camp is seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to join their team as Teen Village Lead Staff. This seasonal role involves creating a safe and fun community for campers while also providing them with opportunities for personal growth and adventure. Staff members are expected to be role models, prioritizing camper well-being and actively participating in camp life. The position offers a unique opportunity to work outdoors, lead challenging trips, and make a significant impact on campers' summer experiences.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to transport campers using company vehicles.
  • Two years of experience with group facilitation of teenagers, with the ability to instill confidence and lead others.
  • One year of prior experience leading and/or guiding backpacking trips OR three years of personal experience planning all aspects of backpacking trips.
  • Current Wilderness First Responder certification (training provided if needed).
  • Ability to use SatPhone and Spot Device.
  • Satisfactorily fulfill requirements for employment at the Staenberg-Loup JCC, including background screening, three references, documentation, and compliance with CDHS law.
  • Must be high-energy, enthusiastic, creative, and open-minded.
  • Must be able to attend staff orientations.
  • Must be available to live at camp for the summer season (minimum 5-6 weeks).
  • Must be 21 years old to drive the 15-passenger Turtle Top Bus.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of previous experience in a camp environment.
  • First Aid and CPR Certifications (training provided if needed).
  • Bachelor's degree or degree in progress in outdoor education, psychology, social work, education, or other related field or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize campers' physical, social, and emotional health, safety, and well-being.
  • Work collaboratively with co-staff to ensure smooth daily operations and adherence to schedules.
  • Complete daily camper notes to track physical and emotional health, social dynamics, and overall well-being.
  • Create an inclusive and engaging community for campers.
  • Actively participate in all camp activities, including horseback riding, swimming, camping, games, and songs.
  • Maintain constant awareness of campers' locations and activities.
  • Manage camper behaviors using positive behavior management techniques learned during staff orientation.
  • Enforce appropriate safety policies, emergency procedures, and camp rules.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing situations at camp.
  • Live in a bunk with co-staff and campers.
  • Facilitate meal preparation in the backcountry, teaching campers how to cook.
  • Help campers develop backcountry camping and survival skills.
  • Drive a 15-passenger Turtle Top Bus (must be 21).
  • Assist with issuing and returning gear, ensuring it is in good repair.
  • Ensure camper safety through conscientious decision-making.
  • Create and run safe, fun, and memorable programs for campers both on and off the trail.
  • Act as the primary point person for communication between basecamp and field staff on trips.
  • Lead a 21-day trip including backpacking, whitewater rafting, climbing, volunteering, camping, and other outdoor adventure activities for up to 12 campers and 2 co-staff.
  • Build campers' personal skills, foster group bonding, and equip them with self-sufficiency tools for camping.
  • Assess trip intensity and adjust in real-time to meet camper needs.
  • Support campers in their day-to-day life on the trail, including personal care, programmatic adaptations, transitions, sensory breaks, conflict resolution, and implementing supports.
  • Work individually with campers who have identified needs (cognitive, social-emotional, psychological, physical, behavioral) to implement care plans and accommodations.
  • Step in to assist other cabin groups needing extra daily support.
  • Manage crisis intervention with campers as needed, including major dysregulation, emotional/mental health struggles, and sensory overload.
