About The Position

The OSP Engineering Technician II is responsible for regularly performing inspection and verification of outside plant fiber networks to include construction elements such as conduit, fiber, splice domes, cabinets, and may perform work in central office environments. OSP Engineering Technicians share responsibility with local contractors for both safety and quality within the market to ensure the project meets all municipality and client requirements. Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Working knowledge of GPS principles and ability to accurately use GPS hardware and software, laser rangefinders, telescoping measuring sticks, measuring wheels and tapes and various surveying equipment to gather field data as needed.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical specifications, engineering documents, and construction drawings.
  • Ability to write reports, correspondence and engineering documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with vendors, customers, permitting authorities, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a diversity of variables in situations where limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form, handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Ability to read and interpret construction maps to build fiber network
  • Great customer service skills
  • Comfortable with hand tools, power tools, test equipment and ladders
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to review both technical and non-technical aspects of field work
  • Ability to review work completed by others and adequately convey required corrections
  • Effectively communicate and work with both internal Engineering and Project Management teams as well as customers
  • Ability to set priorities for self and others and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to efficiently multi-task and work on several projects simultaneously
  • Ability to sketch site layout and surrounding areas, read and take measurements

Nice To Haves

  • 2-3 years of telecom experience is preferred.
  • Alternatively, 2-4 years of utility construction experience is acceptable.
  • Construction or OSP experience preferred
  • Telecommunications and/or cable experience preferred
  • Fiber to the home (FTTH) networks experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Commitment to working and leading safely, in compliance with OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • Perform site visits as needed to document field conditions for new sites and site modification projects.
  • Liaise with contractor for any restoration efforts.
  • Conduct site or pole surveys as required.
  • Use OSP field equipment to gather utility pole line information
  • Work with local municipalities for permitting acquisition and attend meetings in person as required
  • Prepare project documentation and maps.
  • Aid in research and acquisition of permits and right-of-way documentation
  • Develop working relationships and effectively communicate with Management, Project Managers, Foreman, and co-workers to address and resolve problems and work in a cooperative manner to achieve company goals
  • Act as a technical resource for field support, customers, sales, and operations, assisting in and addressing and resolving questions and problems
  • Communicate with customers regarding project progress, where applicable
  • Visit customer sites to gather OSP site survey information, evaluate customer requirements.
  • Daily engagement with customer’s engineering team and project management staff via emails / phone as well as occasional in-person meetings
  • Provide field investigation of aerial and underground construction projects
  • Attend onsite meetings with appropriate stake holders to explain construction procedures and cable routing as necessary.
  • Perform field verifications of existing plant in order to provide accurate pick up points for new development and commercial plant extensions.

  • Supports continuous improvement by following established processes, identifying inefficiencies or issues, and contributing to solutions that improve safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Leverages available tools and technologies, including AI-enabled solutions, where appropriate to improve efficiency and streamline work.
