About The Position

The Cornell Biological Field Station (CBFS), part of the Section of Natural Resources and the Environment of the School of Environment and Global Development, is an internationally renowned center for fisheries and aquatic research located on the shore of Oneida Lake. The Field Station includes a small, protected harbor for research boats and has a number of laboratory, housing, storage, and maintenance buildings. The purpose of this position is to support CBFS in its mission of excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in environmental science, fisheries, and ecology. This role involves organizing and performing fisheries and limnological assessments to generate annual estimates of abundance for important sport fishes on Oneida Lake, New York. The incumbent will conduct sampling using various fishing gear (trawls, gillnets, seines, trap nets, electrofishing) and limnological sampling (nets, sondes), with some sampling occurring at night. Laboratory analysis will include age, growth, and diet studies, as well as other project-specific tasks. The position also requires maintaining electronic data files, conducting preliminary data analyses, and providing summaries to principal investigators. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in developing reports, papers, and publications, including preparing graphics, and will help train undergraduate students. Maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to all safety protocols and procedures, and completing required training from the Cornell Office of Occupational & Environmental Health, is crucial. This is a full-time position (97.50% FTE) as a one-year term appointment, contingent upon available work, funding, and performance. Requirements

  • High school diploma and up to 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NYS driver’s license and be cleared to drive for university business.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Boat operation skills and knowledge of boating safety requirements.
  • Familiarity with basic computer software, particularly spreadsheet and word processing.
  • Knowledge of fish biology, fish sampling and fisheries management.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • B.S. degree or at least two years of experience in the natural resources field.
  • Boater safety certification and basic knowledge of small motor maintenance and repair.
  • Experience with fish sampling including trawls, gillnets, electrofishing, and video surveys.
  • Experience with basic statistical analyses and GIS.
  • Ability to operate electronic equipment such as depth finders, GPS, hydroacoustics, video.
  • Knowledge of Net Repair.

Responsibilities
