About The Position

The School seeks a full-time Technical Theater teacher whose primary responsibility is to deliver a rigorous, student-centered technical theater curriculum while stewarding theater spaces as safe, organized, and effective learning environments. This role prioritizes teaching and curriculum development across all areas of technical theater, including scenic design and construction, lighting, sound, stage management, and production processes. The position supports student learning through theatrical productions and coordinates and mentors a student audiovisual crew ("The Booth Bats"), providing training, supervision, and systems for student-led technical operations within Fine and Performing Arts events as well as school-wide events. The ideal candidate is an educator with strong pedagogical practices, experience working with adolescents, and a commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving through hands-on learning. Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Technical Theater, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated teaching experience, ideally at the middle and/or secondary level.
Substantial expertise in the field.
A student-centered educator who creates an interactive classroom.
A creative problem solver.
Knowledgeable about adolescents’ intellectual, social, and emotional development and willing to positively greet the challenges and opportunities they present.
A professional oral and written communicator.
Eager to work collaboratively with colleagues on curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessments.

Comfortable using technology in the classroom.
Ability to stand, move, and work in a theater and shop environment for extended periods.

Ability to operate basic tools and theater equipment safely.
Ability to ascend/descend ladders and navigate backstage and shop spaces.

Responsibilities

Design and teach Technical Theater courses (typically 2–3 sections) with clearly developed units of study.
Develop curriculum across areas such as: Scenic design and construction, Lighting design fundamentals, Sound design fundamentals, Stage management practices, Production design and collaborative processes, Theater safety and professional standards.
Emphasize conceptual thinking, planning, design process, and safe practices.
Assess student learning using clear benchmarks aligned with departmental goals.
Foster a classroom environment that supports inquiry, collaboration, and creative risk-taking.
Maintain the theater, backstage areas, and scene shop as clean, organized, safe, and functional learning environments.
Establish and uphold systems for: Tool organization and safe storage, Material inventory and access, Student use and cleanup procedures.
Teach and reinforce proper safety protocols and responsible use of tools and equipment.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices in all shop and stage activities.
Conduct routine checks of lighting and sound equipment to ensure operational readiness.
Maintain inventories and basic maintenance logs for technical equipment.
Perform basic troubleshooting and communicate repair or upgrade needs to the Department Chair.
Support student learning through instruction in foundational lighting and sound systems.
Coordinate, train, and supervise the student A/V crew ("The Booth Bats"), establishing clear roles, expectations, and operating procedures.
Oversee student use of lighting and sound systems for Fine and Performing Arts events, ensuring safe and effective operation.
Coordinate the audio-visual needs at all daily assemblies and other school events, large group meetings, and presentations.
Coordinate with external professionals and/or production teams when advanced technical support is required.
Collaborate with directors and production teams during planning phases as needed.
Support student involvement in productions through coursework and supervised shop or design work.
Assist in organizing build schedules and student crew participation when aligned with instructional goals.
Collaborate with department colleagues on pedagogy and curriculum, and to vertically align coursework to provide students with a meaningful scope and sequence throughout their 6-12 school experience.
Reflect on instructional practices and seek out opportunities for professional development.
Create inclusive and effective classroom environments and provide learning support for students inside and outside the classroom as needed, including implementing formal accommodations, in consultation with the Greenhills Learning Center.
Practice clear, timely, and professional communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
Attend regular department, faculty, and other meetings.
Promote an inclusive working and community environment.
Participate in community life through service in Greenhills advising and co-curricular programs, which may include coaching.
Serve as a role model in maintaining appropriate standards of care for students and maintaining healthy boundaries in student and professional relationships.
