About The Position

The Technical Support Scientist works in Abbott Rapid Diagnostics’ Toxicology Business Unit at its Drugs of Abuse manufacturing facility in Pomona, California. The role provides technical support and focuses on moderately complex projects, product improvements, change control, investigations, and resolving technical issues in coordination with other departments. The scientist conducts verification and validation studies for new or modified materials and prepares reports.

The position performs product testing and experiments, analyzes data, investigates customer complaints and quality incidents, and recommends improved testing methods. It also creates and revises technical and controlled documentation, including protocols, reports, procedures, and forms. The scientist works independently on assignments while seeking guidance for more complex challenges, reports progress to the manager, and may direct less experienced staff in day-to-day work. Work is performed in compliance with business policies and applicable regulations, including QSR, ISO, and FDA requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Biological Sciences.
• At least 3 years of experience in a related field.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and good technical writing skills.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions, maintain accurate records and notes, and carry out assignments thoroughly and conscientiously while adhering to safe laboratory practices.
• Ability to conduct experiments according to established guidelines and accurately summarize results.
• Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Knowledge of a variety of laboratory equipment and its operation.
• Ability to functionally direct junior research staff.

Responsibilities

• Conduct product testing and experiments for projects, product improvements, and investigations; compile and analyze data and prepare reports.
• Investigate customer complaints and quality incidents, including root-cause investigations, and prepare investigation reports.
• Conduct verification and validation studies for new or modified materials; write protocols and reports.
• Develop or modify methods and processes for project advancement, and evaluate and recommend improved testing methods.
• Resolve process-related questions and technical issues in coordination with other departments.
• Maintain accurate, professional records of laboratory activities and report progress and results to the manager regularly.
• Create, review, edit, and process controlled documentation, including procedures and forms, using an electronic document management system.
• Use Microsoft Excel and Word to analyze test data and prepare technical documentation, including deviation reports, validation protocols, and trend analyses.
• Order materials needed to complete procedures and prepare technical reports.
• Participate in departmental meetings and represent Technical Support on project teams.
• Work independently, collaborate across the organization, prioritize multiple tasks, and assist with problem solving; may direct less experienced staff in day-to-day work.
• Carry out duties in compliance with established business policies and applicable federal and other regulations, including QSR, ISO, and FDA requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned according to changing business needs.
