Technical Staff, Engineering Technologist

Dell Technologies•Santa Clara, CA
•$230,000 - $297,000

About The Position

The Technical Staff, Data Center Thermal Architect will collaborate on the architecture of next-generation, large-scale AI infrastructure, including accelerated compute, AI fabrics, and AI-optimized storage. The role draws on state-of-the-art rack and data center power solutions and innovative liquid-cooling technologies. As part of an advanced technology pod, the architect defines long-term technology strategies informed by CTO, marketing, development, manufacturing, procurement, customers, and industry stakeholders. The position drives end-to-end solution architecture from server to data center, including air- and liquid-cooled servers, integrated rack solutions, power distribution, and heat rejection. It develops and validates solution overviews, proposes bills of materials and SKUs, designs cooling solutions, and defines hardware topologies optimized for AI workload efficiency and performance. The role works with customers, engineering teams, suppliers, technology partners, ODMs, and business stakeholders to shape solutions and product architecture.

Requirements

  • Experience collaborating with customers on architectural and design requirements spanning IT systems to data center thermal technologies.
  • Advanced working knowledge of heat transfer and ability to analyze component- and system-level problems and apply advanced cooling technologies.
  • Solid understanding of, and relationships with, key suppliers of data center power and thermal-management components.
  • Ability to collaborate with technology partners and the supply base on cutting-edge technology development and work with ODMs on mechanical, thermal, and electrical aspects of system design.
  • Understanding of competitive and business needs when developing technical solutions, including manufacturing processes and tolerance-control requirements for high-volume production.
  • Ability to author architecture specifications that guide development of future products.
  • Experience interfacing effectively with suppliers to support research and obtain information on products or services valuable to the company.
  • Ability to understand business needs while developing technical solutions.
  • Willingness and ability to travel 20%–30%.

Nice To Haves

  • 15 or more years of related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, with emphasis on thermal science, fluid dynamics, and/or heat transfer for data center implementations.
  • An advanced degree may offset years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the architecture of end-to-end solutions from server to data center, including air- and liquid-cooled servers, integrated rack solutions, power distribution, and heat rejection.
  • Innovate power-centric solutions for increasingly dense IT environments.
  • Optimize cost, energy efficiency, and performance from IT systems through the data center.
  • Engage with high-profile AI customers to optimize solutions for their applications and tune systems for maximum performance.
  • Develop solution overviews and validate them with Engineering.
  • Propose bills of materials and SKUs to meet technical requirements, review them with Engineering, and shape the offer accordingly.
  • Design air, liquid, and other cooling solutions based on data center and customer requirements.
  • Drive hardware design based on customer requirements and required infrastructure, addressing liquid cooling and other platform-engineering aspects that scale with data center requirements.
  • Define hardware topologies optimized for efficiency and performance in AI workloads.
  • Define long-term technology strategies using input from CTO, marketing, development, manufacturing, procurement, customers, and industry.
  • Collaborate with customers on architectural and design requirements spanning IT systems and data center thermal technologies.
  • Work with technology partners, suppliers, the supply base, and ODMs on technology development and mechanical, thermal, and electrical aspects of system design.
  • Understand competitive and business needs, manufacturing processes, and tolerance-control requirements for high-volume production, and author architecture specifications to guide future product development.
  • Interface with suppliers to ensure they conduct research and provide information about products or services valuable to the company, coordinating those efforts as needed.
  • Travel 20%–30% to assess customer requirements and develop blueprints.
