Technical Project Manager - Implosion

Xcimer Energy•Denver, CO

About The Position

Xcimer Energy is seeking a Technical Project Manager to drive execution of the Inertial Fusion Energy Program’s Implosion System, including target design, target physics, and ICF implosion systems that enable fusion ignition. The role works closely with technical and program leaders and with target fabrication, metrology, diagnostics, and chamber-interface teams to coordinate, track, and report project activities. The position maintains schedules and documentation, supports design and experiment reviews, and facilitates communication across the Implosion System and its subsystems to help meet critical design-review and experimental-campaign milestones. The successful candidate will bring strong organization and problem-solving skills, technical fluency in target physics, ICF implosion, or high-energy-density hardware systems, and experience delivering engineering or research projects. The role also coordinates staffing and partner work, supports cost and spend planning, and assists with contracts and statements of work. Candidates must meet the stated U.S. citizenship or immigration-status requirement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, project management, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in project engineering, project coordination, project planning and controls, administration, or a similar role supporting target design, target physics, ICF implosion, or complex scientific or engineering R&D in a national-lab, aerospace, defense, or research environment.
  • Problem-solving mindset and proactive approach to identifying and addressing technical and schedule challenges across target and implosion subsystems.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sequence critical-path schedules.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering, scientific, and indirect support teams.
  • Experience coordinating contracts, statements of work, purchase orders, or other commitments through internal approval workflows.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with complex target design, target physics, or ICF implosion projects, ideally in nuclear fusion, high-energy-density physics, directed energy, or aerospace.
  • Strong technical understanding of target design, target physics, or high-energy-density hardware development processes, including design reviews, requirements flow-down, engineering change requests, and product or experiment lifecycles.
  • Working familiarity with design, assembly, integration, and test of target systems or ICF implosion experiments.
  • Proficiency in AI-enabled workflows and data presentation.
  • Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall project-management methodologies.
  • Proficiency with Jira, Confluence, Flow, and other requirements or program-management tools.
  • Experience with procurement, vendor management, or contract administration for national-lab, university, or industry partner agreements.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with program-planning tools such as Primavera P6.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and analyze the integrated schedule established by technical leaders, including milestones, dependencies, risks, issues, resource commitments, and deliverables; incorporate updates and decisions.
  • Plan, schedule, and track progress for Implosion System components and subsystems using Jira, Flow, and other program-planning tools in coordination with Project Controls & Planning.
  • Assess the effects of schedule changes, budget variances, and emerging issues across workstreams, partner commitments, and resources; surface gaps or conflicts to relevant leaders.
  • Monitor target design, experiment planning, and design-review efforts; assess progress toward milestones, identify risks, and escalate issues to Implosion System leaders and Program Management.
  • Manage project documentation, including project plans, requirements and design-review packages, meeting minutes, and action items, maintaining clear communication and records across target design, target physics, and fabrication teams.
  • Coordinate activities and staffing-resource allocation across target design, target physics, fabrication, metrology, procurement, and external partners, facilitating issue resolution and execution of design loops, builds, and experimental campaigns.
  • Track partnership scopes, milestones, deliverables, budgets, and points of contact.
  • Assist with System cost and accounting, develop execution spend plans, and coordinate development and administration of partner contracts and statements of work with technical leads and Contracts, Procurement, Finance, and Legal.
