Technical Program Manager, Science Strategy & Communications

Anthropic•San Francisco, NY

About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Technical Program Manager embedded with the Discovery team to connect researchers advancing Claude’s scientific capabilities with the external scientific community. The role helps researchers use Claude effectively by translating its evolving capabilities into external research use through outreach, editorial programs, grants, research tools, access programs, and partnerships. The position contributes to Anthropic’s external science strategy, including recommending scientific areas and communities to prioritize and how programs, collaborations, and communications should work together. It guides the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog, collaborating with researchers and the Editorial team to identify, source, draft, and edit stories. It also designs and runs external science programs such as AI for Science grants, Team plan offerings for research groups, and partnerships with scientific foundations and grantmaking organizations. The Technical Program Manager gathers feedback from scientific communities on how researchers use Claude and where capability gaps exist, turning those findings into recommendations for research and product teams. The role has significant autonomy after alignment with Discovery leads and works with Communications, Editorial, Beneficial Deployments, universities, funders, scientific societies, and other external partners. It is a technical role requiring research judgment and firsthand understanding of academia, rather than a purely operational position.

Requirements

  • PhD in a scientific or mathematical field, with a track record of original research.
  • Demonstrated writing ability for scientific-domain and general-interest audiences, with sufficient understanding of how modern AI models are trained to write about them accurately.
  • Experience with the grants process, such as applying for and managing competitive funding; experience designing, reviewing, or administering funding programs is preferred.
  • Deep engagement with frontier AI: use AI tools in your own work, understand their strengths and limitations, and take seriously the possibility that AI will transform the scientific process.
  • Track record of driving multi-stakeholder projects to completion and coordinating people who have other high-priority work.
  • Resourcefulness, high agency, and ability to navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities.
  • Credibility with researchers and understanding of academic communities, including their incentives, norms, and sensitivities.
  • Ability to learn quickly, build deep contextual understanding in unfamiliar scientific domains, and contribute meaningfully to discussions with researchers outside your field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a program officer, program director, or fellowship lead at a science funder, research agency, or philanthropy.
  • Published science writing in outlets such as Quanta, Scientific American, or Physics Today, or a substantial public writing presence such as a blog or newsletter.
  • Research experience using AI or ML methods, or involving the development of scientific software, tools, or datasets.
  • Experience building partnerships with scientific societies, journals, or research institutions.
  • Familiarity with AI safety and responsible deployment, including dual-use considerations in fields such as biology.
  • Experience organizing conferences, workshops, or large coordinated launches.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the interface between Anthropic’s researchers working on Claude’s scientific capabilities and the external research community, translating capability gains into use by external researchers.
  • Help establish Anthropic’s external science strategy by recommending scientific areas and communities to focus on and how programs, collaborations, and communications fit together.
  • Guide the scientific direction of the Anthropic Science Blog; work with researchers and Editorial to identify and source internal and external stories, draft and edit posts, and maintain a steady cadence of high-quality science writing.
  • Design, launch, and run external science programs, including AI for Science grants and Team plan offerings for research groups.
  • Build partnerships with scientific foundations and grantmaking organizations, and work with Beneficial Deployments on programs targeting high-impact scientific areas.
  • Identify usage patterns and gather feedback from scientific communities about how researchers use Claude and what capability gaps exist.
  • Translate community feedback into concrete recommendations for research and product teams.
  • Drive decisions about funding, publishing, and engagement with academic communities after aligning with Discovery leads on strategy.
  • Coordinate multi-stakeholder projects and people with competing priorities, navigating ambiguity and shifting priorities.

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Optional equity donation matching
  • Generous vacation and parental leave
