About The Position

TandemLaunch is seeking a Technical Lead to join the founding team of an early-stage deep-tech startup developing next-generation power conversion platforms. The technology is based on novel piezoelectric materials and converter architectures designed to significantly reduce size, improve efficiency, and enhance performance of traditional power management systems in modern electronics. This technology aims to address fundamental limitations of conventional inductive DC-DC converters, including bulky passive components, thermal inefficiencies, and integration challenges in increasingly compact electronic devices. By leveraging advances in piezoelectric materials, resonant architectures, and power electronics design, the platform has the potential to enable smaller, lighter, and more efficient power systems across applications such as consumer electronics, wearables, mobile devices, edge computing hardware, and other compact electronic systems. TandemLaunch is a Canadian venture studio that builds technology companies from cutting-edge academic research, focusing on commercializing innovations in consumer electronics, including sensing systems, advanced materials, wireless technologies, semiconductors, and edge AI. This is a founding role with equity and a competitive cash stipend. The Technical Lead will lead the technical development of the company’s core power electronics platform, spanning converter architecture design, system optimization, prototyping, and commercialization strategy, working closely with the venture studio, academic researchers, and early industry partners to translate breakthrough research into scalable products for next-generation electronic devices.

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the following: Power electronics, DC-DC converter design, Piezoelectric materials or devices, MEMS systems, Analog/mixed-signal electronics, Semiconductor packaging or hardware integration.
  • Strong understanding of power management challenges in compact electronic systems.
  • Experience building experimental hardware systems and validating performance in real-world conditions.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing, packaging, and scaling hardware technologies.
  • Ability to operate across disciplines spanning materials, device design, and systems engineering.
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort operating in an early-stage startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of novel piezoelectric power conversion architectures.
  • Evaluate system performance across efficiency, power density, thermal behavior, and reliability metrics.
  • Optimize converter topologies for compact electronic systems with strict size and power constraints.
  • Benchmark the platform against traditional inductive and capacitive power conversion approaches.
  • Work closely with researchers to evaluate piezoelectric materials, fabrication methods, and device integration strategies.
  • Identify manufacturability constraints and pathways toward scalable production.
  • Support packaging and integration efforts for compact electronic form factors.
  • Build and validate functional prototypes of next-generation power conversion systems.
  • Develop testing methodologies for efficiency, durability, thermal performance, and real-world operating conditions.
  • Support iterative experimentation to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Identify high-value commercial applications across consumer electronics, wearables, mobile devices, edge hardware, and adjacent sectors.
  • Work with the venture studio to shape product strategy, go-to-market priorities, and technical milestones.
  • Engage with potential customers, strategic partners, and investors to communicate technical differentiation and product potential.
  • Define long-term technical strategy and product roadmap.
  • Help shape IP development strategy and competitive positioning.
  • Build and lead the early technical team as the company scales.
