About The Position

TandemLaunch is seeking a Technical Lead to join the founding team of an early-stage deep-tech startup emerging from their venture studio. This startup is developing a novel sensing platform based on graphene-enabled electrochemical sensors combined with advanced AI to enable real-time chemical and biological signal detection across a range of applications, including women’s health monitoring, smart agriculture, and environmental sensing. The technology is designed to address fundamental challenges in capturing high-resolution, real-time biochemical data outside of controlled lab environments. By leveraging the unique electrical and surface properties of graphene, the platform aims to deliver sensitive, scalable, and cost-effective sensing solutions capable of operating in complex, noisy, real-world conditions. TandemLaunch is a Canadian venture studio that builds technology companies from cutting-edge academic research, focusing on commercializing innovations in consumer electronics, including sensing systems, advanced materials, wireless technologies, and edge AI. This is a founding role with equity and a competitive cash stipend. You will lead the development of the core sensing and intelligence stack, spanning signal acquisition, processing, and machine learning, while guiding system integration and early product development. You will work closely with the venture studio, researchers, and early partners to translate novel sensing capabilities into robust, deployable systems across multiple application domains.

Requirements

  • MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or in a related field.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the following: Graphene or nanomaterial-based sensor development, Electrochemical sensing systems, Machine learning applied to physical or sensor data.
  • Strong experience with signal processing, data acquisition, and working with noisy real-world data.
  • Hands-on experience with experimental systems and hardware-software integration.
  • Ability to operate across disciplines (materials, hardware, algorithms).
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort working in an early-stage startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and implementation of signal-processing pipelines for graphene-based electrochemical sensors.
  • Develop methods for signal conditioning, noise reduction, calibration, and drift compensation in challenging environments.
  • Extract robust features from high-dimensional, low-SNR sensor data.
  • Develop or oversee machine learning models for pattern recognition, anomaly detection, and predictive analytics on sensor data.
  • Ensure models are interpretable, generalizable, and adaptable across application domains.
  • Explore approaches for combining physics-based models with data-driven methods.
  • Integrate sensing hardware, data acquisition, and analytics into functional prototypes.
  • Guide experimental design and validation across different use cases (e.g., biological fluids, environmental samples).
  • Support system-level optimization for performance, reliability, and scalability.
  • Define technical strategy and help shape the long-term roadmap and IP strategy across sensing and AI.
  • Engage with early customers, partners, and investors to demonstrate technical capabilities and application potential.
