About The Position

Arcadis is seeking a Technical Director, Structures with expertise in Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) projects to join their Roads and Highways Ontario team. This role involves providing technical leadership for bridge and structural engineering deliverables, collaborating with various disciplines like geotechnical, roadway, and drainage to develop integrated solutions for MTO clients. The Technical Director will ensure technical excellence, appropriate governance, and consistent quality across complex transportation projects, while also supporting the growth of the firm's bridges/structures and geotechnical capabilities for MTO work. The position combines technical leadership, project delivery support, and stakeholder management, acting as a senior technical advisor and reviewer for bridge/structural and geotechnical interfaces. Responsibilities include guiding on MTO standards, risk management, constructability, and design innovation, as well as contributing to the growth of the MTO structures practice and driving continuous improvement of technical tools and processes. The successful candidate will lead on MTO projects, providing quality control and governance, offering consultancy services, and developing solutions for complex MTO requirements. They will build a professional profile, establish multi-disciplinary teams, manage technical risk, and define technical review plans. The role also involves staff development through coaching and mentoring, fostering client relationships, identifying opportunities, and providing technical input into bidding processes. The Technical Director will act as a technical authority, ensuring designs are coordinated, compliant with MTO standards, and delivered within quality, schedule, and budget. They will promote technical governance and safety culture, support staff development, and contribute to recruitment and capability-building of the structures team, providing technical direction and oversight for complex bridge and structural rehabilitation/new design assignments.

Requirements

  • 15–20+ years consulting experience delivering MTO (or similar) transportation infrastructure projects, including leading complex multi-disciplinary teams across structures (bridges), geotechnical, roadway, and related disciplines.
  • P.Eng Ontario.
  • Demonstrated technical authority in bridge/structural engineering with strong understanding of geotechnical considerations (foundations, retaining systems, slopes/earthworks), plus commercial and project delivery acumen.
  • Previous relevant experience including leadership of the development and implementation of bridge/structural and geotechnical engineering solutions for MTO projects, including technical governance, independent checks, and design reviews.
  • Previously worked in a Technical Director, Structures Lead, or senior structural/bridge engineering leadership role with significant MTO bridges experience and proven ability to lead complex multi-disciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for bridge and structural engineering deliverables.
  • Work closely with geotechnical, roadway, drainage, and other disciplines to develop integrated solutions for MTO clients.
  • Ensure technical excellence, appropriate governance, and consistent quality across complex transportation projects.
  • Support the continued growth of bridges/structures and geotechnical capability for MTO work.
  • Act as a senior technical advisor and reviewer for bridge/structural and geotechnical interfaces.
  • Provide guidance on MTO standards and requirements, risk management, constructability, and design innovation.
  • Contribute to the direction and growth of the MTO structures practice within the firm.
  • Help drive continuous improvement of technical tools, standards, and quality processes.
  • Provide consultancy services for projects.
  • Develop solutions that address complex MTO requirements (including staging, traffic management constraints, utility/rail interfaces, and constructability).
  • Build a professional profile and reputation within the industry and within Arcadis.
  • Establish effective, multi-disciplinary teams to deliver bridge/structural and geotechnical components successfully.
  • Manage technical risk mitigation, safety in design, and value in design and delivery processes.
  • Define and implement technical review plans, key milestones, and reporting at all stages.
  • Support the development of staff by coaching and mentoring on bridge design, structural rehabilitation, foundation and earthworks considerations, and MTO-specific issues.
  • Help establish and consolidate relationships with MTO and other public sector clients.
  • Use sector knowledge to identify and pursue opportunities.
  • Provide technical leadership input into the bidding process.
  • Act as a technical authority for structures and the structures–geotechnical interface.
  • Ensure designs are coordinated, compliant with MTO standards, and delivered to required quality, schedule, and budget.
  • Promote consistent technical governance and a strong safety culture.
  • Support the development of staff assigned to your projects.
  • Help identify training and mentoring needs to strengthen bridge and geotechnical delivery capability.
  • Support the recruitment and capability-building of the structures team by providing input on role requirements, participating in interviews as needed, and contributing to onboarding and technical development plans.
  • Provide technical direction and oversight for complex bridge and structural rehabilitation/new design assignments.
  • Ensure clear communication and collaboration between Arcadis colleagues and subconsultants.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of innovative, practical solutions for MTO clients that resolve complex problems.
  • Coach and mentor professionals to support the growth of Arcadis’ bridges/structures and geotechnical talent pool.
