About The Position

The Technical Control Engineer ensures the smooth operation and reliability of Symbotic’s automated systems at client sites. The role combines reactive support with proactive monitoring, incident ownership, and continuous improvement. The engineer troubleshoots complex technical issues, leads high-priority incidents, and contributes to scalable processes and knowledge management. The position works closely with Engineering, R&D, Implementation, and Customer Operations to transition new sites from Hypercare to steady-state support and maintain operational excellence and long-term system reliability. The Technical Support Team is part of Symbotic’s Service Operations Organization. It supports the successful stand-up, performance, and ongoing operation of Symbotic systems at customer sites, covering controls, electrical, software, networking, and infrastructure. The team is the primary escalation point for real-time system issues and works across functions to troubleshoot, analyze root causes, and implement sustainable solutions. This role provides advanced remote support for automated and robotic systems, controls, software, networking, and infrastructure. It owns issues from intake through resolution, coordinates cross-functional teams during incidents, monitors system health, and drives preventative actions and knowledge-base improvements. Up to 15% travel may be required to client and other customer locations. The employee must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive and/or fly to those locations. The employee is responsible for personally managing expenses on a credit card and is reimbursed bi-weekly.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in a technical support, controls, or engineering role supporting complex systems.
  • Demonstrated experience providing remote system support, including Remote Desktop and SSH.
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking, protocols, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with packet sniffers, network probes, and command-line diagnostic tools.
  • Proficiency with Linux shell environments and scripting.
  • Working knowledge of SQL scripting and application support.
  • Familiarity with ISC DHCP, BIND, and server configuration.
  • Experience with motion control systems, including servos and VFDs; Allen Bradley ControlLogix; and programming languages such as Ladder Logic, C, and scripting languages.
  • Experience with server management, Active Directory, and Windows/Linux patching.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and perform effectively in high-pressure, customer-facing environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% as required.
  • Ability to personally manage work expenses on a credit card pending bi-weekly reimbursement.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent hands-on experience in industrial automation, robotics, or controls may be considered.
  • Prior field or industry experience in automation, robotics, warehouse, or supply chain environments.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and resolve complex technical support requests from end users through ticketing systems, phone, email, and chat.
  • Provide advanced remote support for electro-mechanical, software, networking, and controls-related issues using remote access tools.
  • Troubleshoot issues involving automation and robotic systems, PLCs, motors, VFDs, motion control systems, software applications, networking, and scripting.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point and focal lead during major incidents.
  • Coordinate Software, Controls, Hardware, R&D, and Customer Operations resources to restore service efficiently.
  • Prioritize incoming issues based on customer impact, system criticality, and contractual SLAs.
  • Provide timely and clear incident updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Respond to equipment downtime events and coordinate with external vendors or resources as needed.
  • Monitor system performance metrics, logs, and trends to identify potential failures before they affect operations.
  • Lead root cause analysis for critical and recurring incidents to reduce MTTR and prevent recurrence.
  • Identify systemic issues and recurring failure patterns and translate findings into preventative actions and process improvements.
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and lead follow-up actions to ensure sustained resolution.
  • Own critical events from incident intake through full resolution, ensuring accountability.
  • Collaborate with R&D, Implementation, and Customer Operations to transition new sites from Hypercare to steady-state support.
  • Use metrics from high-impact downtime events to create and improve knowledge-base content with measurable value to issue resolution and recurrence prevention.
  • Contribute to a scalable knowledge base that enables shift-left resolution and improves self-sufficiency for customers and on-site Tier 1 teams.
  • Support system maintenance activities, including data backups, trend analysis, and I/O checks.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, OEM manuals, and system documentation to diagnose integrated system issues.
  • Stay current on supported software, hardware, tools, and platform updates relevant to Symbotic systems.
