About The Position

RLI is seeking a Technical Claim Director for its Commercial Auto/Trucking Major Case Unit. This role involves handling potential high-exposure, complex bodily injury claims across the United States. The director will be responsible for all aspects of claim-handling, including fact investigation, claim evaluation, and litigation management. Key responsibilities include analyzing complex coverage issues, developing and implementing claim resolution strategies, managing mediations and trials, and selecting and directing defense counsel. The role also requires collaborative communication with Underwriting on developments impacting product lines and handling special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in business administration, insurance, or a related field; and 8+ years of relevant legal or insurance related experience with commercial transportation claims or a Juris Doctorate with 5+ years of transportation/insurance defense experience.
  • Experience in handling high-exposure trucking, bus, and/or commercial auto bodily injury claims and litigation in various jurisdictions across the United States.
  • Strong proactive investigative and strategic claim handling, hands-on attorney management, and sophisticated claims resolution skills are essential.
  • Superior working knowledge of case law, statutes, and procedures impacting the handling and value of trucking, bus, and/or commercial auto claims and would benefit from having experience with handling claims for across the United States.
  • Superior writing and communication skills to work effectively with insureds, claimants, underwriters, other team members, and upper management.
  • Must be able to excel in a fast-paced environment with little supervision.
  • Ability to generate innovative solutions within the Claims department.

Responsibilities

  • Handle potential high-exposure, complex bodily injury claims across the United States.
  • Responsible for all aspects of claim-handling, including fact investigation, claim evaluation, and litigation management.
  • Effectively investigate and analyze complex coverage issues and write coverage letters as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement claim resolution strategies, including independent handling of mediations and trials in complex claims.
  • Select, retain, and direct appropriate defense counsel on litigated cases.
  • Collaboratively communicate with Underwriting on developments that may impact their respective product lines.
  • Handle special projects and other duties as needed.
