About The Position

The Traverso Lab at MIT is seeking a Technical Associate I in Mechanical Engineering to contribute to fast-paced, interdisciplinary, and collaborative projects focused on developing next-generation drug delivery systems. This role involves designing and prototyping micro- to milli-scale devices using various fabrication techniques, functionally characterizing these devices through in vivo and ex vivo experiments, and documenting research results by creating Standard Operating Procedures. The position also includes presenting research findings, conducting literature reviews, potentially co-authoring manuscripts, assisting with materials procurement and lab event planning, and ensuring adherence to safety standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical/biological/biomedical engineering, materials science, or a field directly related to the work.
  • A minimum of two years specialized lab experience (which may include experience gained as an undergraduate).
  • Commitment to producing accurate and high-quality protocols and data.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize own work to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to learn new scientific tools and techniques quickly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with device prototyping.
  • Proficiency with device design tools.
  • Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques.
  • Experience with (bio)material characterization.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype micro- to milli-scale devices using additive/subtractive/molding techniques.
  • Functionally characterize devices by assisting with and performing in vivo and ex vivo experiments.
  • Summarize and document research results by writing Standard Operating Procedures for efficient development of successive device generations.
  • Present research findings at laboratory meetings.
  • Research and provide content for presentations, grant progress reports, and fulfill internal requests for information.
  • Conduct literature reviews to support research work and potentially co-author manuscripts.
  • Assist in materials procurement and planning lab events.
  • Ensure safety standards/procedures are followed, prepare lab for inspections, and correct problems.
