About The Position

Southwest Airlines Co. is seeking a Tech Lead Software Engineer for their Talent & Org Strategy department. This role is responsible for leading and motivating a team of developers in delivering highly reliable software. The Tech Lead will ensure the technical quality of the software, collaborate with business stakeholders to meet expectations, and act as a liaison between the development team and leadership. The position involves providing development estimates, creating and approving application designs, developing and maintaining software with a focus on quality and maintainability, and ensuring alignment with solution architectures. The role also includes developing, maintaining, and executing unit, functional, and integration tests with an emphasis on automation and test-driven development. Additionally, the Tech Lead will provide technical oversight for performance testing, plan and oversee application deployments, investigate new technologies, identify and resolve technical debt, and mentor the development team on various technical topics. The role requires evaluating code for validity, structure, industry standards, and compatibility. Specific technologies used include Lambdas, Java, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, GraphQL, Cloud technologies (Python, Kafka, AWS Services, GitLab, CloudWatch, AWS Fargate).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, Data Engineer, or in a related/similar position.
  • 5 years of experience in software development and API development.
  • 5 years of experience using Java, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, GraphQL, and Cloud technologies, including AWS Services, GitLab and pipelines.
  • 3 years of experience in Lambdas, Python, and Cloudwatch.
  • 2 years of experience with Kafka.
  • 1 year of experience with AWS Fargate.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and motivate a Team of developers in the planning, delivery, and operation of highly reliable software.
  • Accountable for the technical quality of the software that the Development Team produces.
  • Closely collaborate with the Business and other Stakeholders to ensure software meets functional and non-functional expectations.
  • Act as an interface between the Development Team and Leadership, ensuring capacity and skillsets are aligned to meet ongoing delivery expectations.
  • Provide accurate development estimates in support of feasibility assessments and planned development activities.
  • Create, maintain, review and approve application designs in collaboration with Solution Architects and shared services Teams, ensuring alignment to the appropriate solution architectures and taking tradeoffs into account.
  • Develop, maintain, and review software with a focus on quality and maintainability.
  • Develop, maintain, review, and execute unit, functional, and integration tests with a focus on automation and test-driven development.
  • Provide technical oversight for performance testing, ensuring plan and outcomes align to expected non-functional requirements.
  • Plan and oversee application deployment activities and sequencing in non-production and production environments.
  • Investigate new technologies that could improve the applications and development activities.
  • Identify and resolve technical debt as appropriate, weighing the development effort against the value returned.
  • Mentor and coach Development Team on relevant architecture, design, development, and operations topics.
  • Evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards, and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.
