About The Position

Southwest Airlines Co. is seeking a Tech Lead Software Engineer in Dallas, TX. This hybrid role involves leading and motivating a team of developers in the planning, delivery, and operation of highly reliable software. The position is accountable for the technical quality of the software produced by the Development Team and requires close collaboration with Business and other Stakeholders to ensure software meets functional and non-functional expectations. The Tech Lead will act as an interface between the Development Team and Leadership, ensuring capacity and skillsets align with delivery expectations, and provide accurate development estimates for feasibility assessments and planned development activities. Responsibilities include creating, maintaining, reviewing, and approving application designs in collaboration with Solution Architects and shared services Teams, ensuring alignment to appropriate solution architectures and considering tradeoffs. The role involves developing, maintaining, and reviewing software with a focus on quality and maintainability, as well as developing, maintaining, reviewing, and executing unit, functional, and integration tests with a focus on automation and test-driven development. Technical oversight for performance testing, planning and overseeing application deployment activities, investigating new technologies, and identifying/resolving technical debt are also key aspects. The Tech Lead will mentor and coach the Development Team on architecture, design, development, and operations topics, and evaluate code for validity, structure, industry standards, and compatibility. Specific technologies to be used include Lamdas, Java, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, GraphQL, Cloud technologies (Python, Kafka, AWS Services, GitLab, CloudWatch, AWS Fargate).

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience in the job offered or as a Software Engineer, Software Developer, Data Engineer, or in a related/similar position.
  • 5 years of experience in software development and API development.
  • 5 years of experience using Java, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, GraphQL, and Cloud technologies, including AWS Services, GitLab and pipelines.
  • 3 years of experience in Lamdas, Python, and Cloudwatch.
  • 2 years of experience with Kafka.
  • 1 year of experience with AWS Fargate.
  • Hybrid role, ability to work from home.

  • Develop, maintain, review, and execute unit, functional, and integration tests with a focus on automation and test-driven development.
  • Provide technical oversight for performance testing, ensuring plan and outcomes align to expected non-functional requirements.
  • Plan and oversee application deployment activities and sequencing in non-production and production environments.
  • Investigate new technologies that could improve the applications and development activities.
  • Identify and resolve technical debt as appropriate, weighing the development effort against the value returned.
  • Mentor and coach Development Team on relevant architecture, design, development, and operations topics.
  • Evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards, and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.
