About The Position

UNH Tech Camp is a summer STEM program for students entering grades 5-12. Open to all curious learners, the goal of the camp is to cultivate interest and excitement around subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through interactive, hands-on activities. Tech Camp runs for 3 weeks in July on the University of New Hampshire Durham campus. Tech Camp Night Counselors assist the Residential Life Manager in directing and supervising residential campers in the evenings, reside with the campers in the dormitory, and accompany campers to both breakfast and dinner in the dining hall. A night counselor is responsible for managing small groups of campers and serving as a role model and ambassador to the university.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at a college/university or community college
  • Enthusiasm for working with students in grades 5-12
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and learn on-the-job
  • Must be a proactive self-starter who can adapt to changes and unplanned challenges
  • Reliability and flexibility in the event scheduling changes occur
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to exhibit a logical sense of priority and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to independently travel between various locations on campus
  • A successful background check is required
  • Must attend a required staff training half-day hosted by the Res Life Manager

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in a summer camp or similar youth-focused program
  • STEM or Education majors encouraged, but not required
  • Experience working as an RA, CA or similar role on a college campus

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site camper supervision during residential program hours
  • Ensure health and safety of campers, including compliance with all UNH Youth Programs risk management protocols relating to minors
  • Report student behavior concerns or accidents to the Res Life Director in a timely fashion and provide input to the resolution team as needed
  • Supervise campers when walking to and from buildings to ensure campers stay together and no one is left behind
  • Maintain accurate daily camper “safety sheets” to ensure accountability for campers at regular intervals throughout the afternoon/evening
  • Enforce the use of the “buddy system” both with campers and with fellow counselors to ensure no camper is ever left alone to wander
  • Foster a positive and inclusive dorm environment where campers feel safe and comfortable to approach staff with needs or wants
  • Serve as an exemplary role model to campers and staff in attitude and respectful behavior
  • Serve as a positive ambassador to the camp and university when interacting with families or other community members who may be visiting the camp
  • Assist with check-in and check-out procedures for families on the first and last day of camp
  • Implement fun, engaging, and flexible programming for campers, at the direction of the Res Life Manager
  • Follow the “duty schedule” to provide coverage during the overnight hours
  • Participate in mandatory staff training provided by the Res Life Manager
