About The Position

UNH Tech Camp is a summer STEM program for students entering grades 5-12. Open to all curious learners, the goal of the camp is to cultivate interest and excitement around subjects related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through interactive, hands-on activities. Tech Camp runs for 3 weeks in July on the University of New Hampshire Durham campus. Tech Camp Counselors are responsible for duties as assigned by the Camp Manager and/or Camp Director during the daytime camp hours of 8am-4pm. These duties may include but are not limited to the following: helping supervise project groups, running morning and afternoon meetings, gathering and delivering project supplies, taking photos, walking campers to and from the nurse (with another staff member) and other duties as assigned. Counselors should be prepared for a highly dynamic role in which their daily duties are responsive to the needs of the day.

Requirements

  • No minimum education required – current high school students will be considered
  • Enthusiasm for working with students in grades 5-12
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and learn on-the-job
  • Adapts to changes in priorities and unplanned challenges
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, sometimes loud environment
  • Ability to independently travel between various locations on campus
  • A successful background check is required (or two letters of reference if the applicant is under 18 years old).
  • Must attend a required staff training half-day hosted by the Tech Camp Leadership team

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in a summer camp or similar youth-focused program
  • STEM or Education majors encouraged, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Organizing and/or leading morning and afternoon meetings with campers that engage them in brief but fun activities or discussions to jumpstart or conclude the day
  • Assisting project leaders and co-leaders with daily activities as needed, including providing coverage should a staff member need to leave unexpectedly
  • Encouraging campers to engage in activities and try new things and leading by example if campers are reluctant
  • Helping to gather materials for the day and ensuring they are properly returned at the end of each day
  • Taking photos of various project groups/activities throughout the day and helping to download and organize photos into albums at the end of each day
  • Gathering quick “blurbs” from each project group and organizing them into a Word doc for inclusion in the bi-weekly newsletter
  • Walking campers to and from the nurse as needed (with another staff member)
  • Assisting the Camp Manager with light office tasks such as making copies, organizing materials, or delivering supplies
  • Helping to set up for community showcase events on Fridays (putting up signs, moving small tables)
  • Helping with camp clean up and breakdown at the end of each day and week
  • Serve as a positive ambassador to the camp and university when interacting with families or other community members who may be visiting the camp
